D2 vs cpmD2?.

Whats the main diffrence between the two steels D2 and cpm D2?.
I dont own any knives in D2 but no its got large carbides and is a bitch to sharpen ive heard.
 
The difference is that CPM D2 has smaller and more evenly distributed carbides .That means it's better for the maker and the user.Easier to grind and sharpen and better wear resistance. A winner , just like CPM 154 vs 154CM.

Id heard there is a massive diffrence in cpm154cm and 154cm.
Is there any diffrence in toughness or is it just to small to tell the diffrence?.
Im thinking of getting a para in either steel just wondered what the diffrence is in the two although i had assumed cpmD2 would be the better choice but ive never used either steel.
 
first of all heat treat plays a major role in how well a knife performs. second...unless you are a metalurgist most people will not notice the difference between various steels. I could loan a person my knife that is made of 440c and one made of cpm154 and they would not notice the difference. Just pick one that suits your budget and i doubt you will not be satisfied with what you got as both are really good.
 
This link is a good read of FAQ'a of steel put up by Joe Talmadge. There are a lot of differences between D2 and CPM D2, and 154CM and CPM 154. Most all of this is explained in his thread.
 
The CPM steels have higher toughness especially transverse toughness.Of course since I'm a metallurgist I can detect all the differences !!! Actually you should be able to tell the difference between plain an CPM knives. Search through the Knife Maker's sectio for comments .They all love CPM.
