D2 vs. Pocket Rust

I'm just wondering how Benchmade D2 steel would resist rust if carried in a Kydex sheath, inside of a back pocket?

Anyone have any experience?

Thank you.......................Doc

Never with D2 but I pockect carried 1084, 1095, and O1 with both leather and kydex sheaths, never had a issue just wipe em down if they get wet or it's humid

For what it is worth, I used a Kershaw D2 composite blade JYD to cut some kind of thistle that had quite a bit of milky sap. I then forgot to clean it and put it up wet. When I pulled it out a week later I found only a couple of pin prick size rust spots.

Don't know how that would compare to sheath carry. But, in my experience, D2 is almost stainless. Just like it says on the tin.

I really like D-2. Normal care is good if you use your knife and care for it as any other. If it's a carry piece that only sees daylight occasionally then you just keep it lubed lightly and look at it every now and then.

I have a BM710 - my 2nd "good" knife, that I bought years ago and it's seen a lot of EDC and that wicked looking D2 blade is almost as nice as the day it arrived. I've never seen a spot of rust, despite washing it out and using in damp applications.

You should be fine, just whipe it down with a bit of oil from time to time (just to clean it up, no need to keep it oiled). I've got a couple of D2 fixed blades that I carry in my pocket, with basic maintenance I've had zero issues. I've got toxic sweat that will put rust spots on S30V in a single day of carry.

I've been carrying a bone collector 15015 for about 2 months as my edc. I have had zero problems with it.

D2 is semi-stainless, But WILL rust if not taken care of. Keep it clean, Use a good rust inhibitor like Eezox, Tuf-Glide or FrogLube and you will have no problems.

HUGE fan of D2 BTW. I love my BM710!

The d2 on my mini warn does great, only time it had issues was when I let water/salt combination get to it from using it for soft plastics while fishing.

the only reason the belt sheath might be better than your pocket is if you sweat heavily through your pants. and I mean heavily.

everything should otherwise be equal. d2 is pretty resilient. wipe it off on your pants after you use it. if you cut something particularly nasty maybe rinse it.

rust is way overblown, it's more of a pain to clean tape residue off of a blade than it is to clean rust off, and we pretty much all do that if we cut boxes. and rust is way easier to avoid. not sure why people cause such a stink about it.

Carried my Brous Silent Soldier with no coating as a neck knife for quite a while. Sweat all over it in the hot AZ summer multiple times and then let it sit there and dry under the shirt when I got back under some AC. Never saw a single speck of rust. I'm sure if I cut an onion and let it sit or something like that I could make it stain, but for normal everyday use I consider D2 a fantastic steel.

D2 is often considered "almost" stainless.

But of course even stainless can rust, so just wipe it down every week or so with an oily rag and you should be fine (try using Blue Lube or 3 in 1 oil)

I personally LOVE D2, its one of my fav steels and I have many knives with D2 blades.

Just like you should do with any knife, wipe it down after usage, especially cutting anything that leaves liquid residue on the blade.

I have never had any issues with rust on any of my knives, D2 blades included.

If your worried about rust make sure to use a light coating of oil to keep it lubed.

Personally I'd recommend "Aegis Solutions EDC", its liquid form, just spray it on wipe it into the blade and wipe the excess off.

One coating lasts a minimum of 3-4 weeks and can withstand heavy sweat without any issues or rust forming.

Take a look at their website and YouTube channel to get some more info.

Just my .02

Thank you all of those who shared their opinion. It is appreciated.

I feel better now about POCKET carry. The knife is on it's way to me now. Then I will see about a locally made Kydex sheath.

If I can't find a Kydex maker locally, would any of you have any suggestions on a sheath crafter?

I've had SS blades of all types rust just sitting in my pocket while underway in a heavy saltwater environment.

Wiping the blade down with a quality oil that contains rust inhibitors will do the trick and all you need. I personally used Break-Free CLP for over 20 years with great results but there are many fantastic products on the market you can use.

Bottom line, any steel will rust. Wipe the blade clean and dry and oil occasionally and you'll be fine. Benchmade's D2 is a lot more corrosion resistant then you might think. It will hold up pretty well but like all steels will rust. Like I said, a little oil is all you need.

Best of luck!
