D2 Zancudo?

I have the zancudo and can say it's really nice. It compares with a rat 2 very well. The zancudo flips and is framelock and the rat is liner lock no flipper. That's the biggest difference. Recently I am buying American made only but if I was buying an import these would be the only two knives I would consider for less than 100 bucks. I'm love my mini grips and do think that they are an improvement over these two knives. Functionally speaking the zancudo will serve you well. I really put mine through the ringer and it always sharpens up easy and stays sharp pretty good too. For the money it's a great edc,

I have one with the carbon fiber handle and D2 blade. Got it just last night.

I really enjoyed the plastic handle AUS8 version. I liked it enough to try out this new one.

I'm not really sold on the cf handle. It somehow feels cheaper than the plastic handle. This is my first knife with cf handles so I don't know if this is normal or not.

I used the knife for about an hour and a half on inch-thick rubber stall mats I'm putting in a storage room. It did just fine. I'm not a steel snob in any way, but the D2 held up well.

I like it, but I question if it was worth it over the $22 I spent for the original. That's just because I feel the cf is worse than the plastic. I'm sure most would disagree with how popular cf is around here and might actually enjoy it.

Wow, seems ESEE was quicker than OKC. I always said either a Zancudo or a Rat II in D2 would be an instant buy...

I sold my Zancudo in Aus8, the Rat II won out for me, but I'd be tempted to try one again with D2

I just got one of the Zancudos in D2.
It has a great edge out of the box but I really haven't put it to any hard work yet.

I only have a couple other D2 blades and they perform good so if these are hardened properly they are quite a bargain for what they are going for.
My BM Adamas was a pain to sharpen cause I got normal asymmetrical edge but the Zancudo should be easier as it is much thinner stock and it won't require any rebevel action.

Normally I don't care for frame locks but the Zancudo isn't bad, even for a lefty, and I may even try out a D2 Avispa.
It is nice they upgraded the steel in these knives but I hope they don't discontinue the AUS8.
AUS8 is a great steel IMO for what it is and I've tried most of the steels that are out there on production knives.

Thanks!
I've had other knives in D2 and liked it a lot, but wondered how the Zancudo treated their D2.
Looks like I should get one, sounds like a bargain.

Having spent another few hours with it trimming insulation, the D2 is growing on me.

Still, I would next time choose the non-carbon fiber D2 version and save a couple of bucks. I'll likely sharpen this one up and gift it here to a friend who has a thing for carbon fiber.

I understand that the Rat 2 is next in line for the D2 steel. I'd like to try that, but I do like the blade shape and the grip on the Zancudo more.

Oh, if anyone is interested, the cf side does not have a steel liner. The plastic handle D2 one has a liner. Thought that was interesting. The cf one I have does feel pretty light, but not game changing compared to the regular one.

I seem to forget, the Zancudo and Avispa are the same besides size right? Which is the larger of the two?

How do I test blades claimed to be D2? Soak it in acid over night and look for patina?

Don't use acid.
You need a small bar stock of R2 and tap them together.
If you hear a "bleeping" sound it is the real deal.

I don't think just tapping them together usually works... sometimes you really have to use the force to make it "bleep".

There is a bit of difference in the handles. The Avispa is not a bad knife, but I find it less comfortable than the Zancudo in the hand.

Wow that's really great to hear! Are the stand off's still cammed (D-shaped)? Should make making a scale for it much easier than the plastic version w/ nested liner!

I have the D2 Zancudo with frp/ plastic and like it a lot, it displaced a vg10 Delica in m collection. Yes the carbon fiber Zancudo isn't really carbon fiber but rather G10 with a thin carbon fiber overlay, I didn't like it either.
