Im using a planner blade and from what ive been told it is either a2 or d2 i have annealed it in my forge and let it cool in vermiculite took 2 hrs to profile what a bear. but i got it done using AO 2x 72 belts my guestion is since i want to do this form start to finish. when i go to heat treat in my forge since i dont have a pyrometer or temp sticks and the temp i need to bring it too is about 1825f what color of the steel should i be looking for?

I'd say get some temp sticks. I was consulting three books when I did my home heat treat of D2, but I'll be going with temp sticks in the future.

frankly, Ive never heard of planer blades being made from A2....mostly D2 and W2 and HSS, I would take a little piece and send it somewhere to get analysed or you might have a big headache in store

D2 and W2 would be a lot easier to tell apart than D2 and A2. Standard annealing attempts tend to harden A2 and D2. I know that Ohio knife company planer blades are D2, Grizzly are A2. Anyone else, I'd call the company.
