I have been buying my D2 from Texas Knifemakers Supply in the past. The last time I ordered, I ordered some precision ground from Flat Ground. This precision ground stuff grinds easier than what I was getting from TKS. Has anyone ever seen this before, that one suppliers steel grinds easier than someone elses?

It may be due to differences in heat treat though D2 should be supplied as spheroidized annealed.

That and the precision ground doesn't have the bark that can be a pita. the bark doesn't seem to be as bad as it was in years past. ATS-34 was so bad in this regard, that several suppliers sold special belts, called a bubble belt just to remove the bark. Now most steel manufactures also pickel the steel along with annealing. if you get ahold of non pickeled stock, you can soak it in white vinegar for 24 hrs. It will remove the hard bark. Some pickles with your knife sir? Mike

Walt, I experienced the same thing. I got D2 from TKS that was a PITA to grind. I've since been getting it from Precision Marshall (toolanddie.com) and it so much easier to work.

The <flatground.com> D2 is either Precision Marshall or Uddeholm, depending on what they have in stock. I can't objectively tell any difference. The same goes for their A2. O1 I have got from them was Starrett.

Since I started using the Trizact CF (gator) in A300 to hog with, I can't tell much difference between the high alloy steels except for S30V which is still a bitch.

I use Norton Ceramic 50 grit for the inital grinding. I had a 4" blade that I had profiled out of the TKS D2 that needed the bevels ground on it. I ground it and then picked up one of the ones out of the precision ground steel and I could tell a marked difference in the two. Not just on the surface but all the way through. I almost messed up a false edge on the second one because it ground so much easier and quicker than I was expecting, I had too much pressure on it. It will be several days before I get to play with it again, have to go do some of the part time job.
Steve, have you tried 3V yet? It can be a pain also.
