Got my first knife in D2 steel any special sharpening tricks i should use ? Have a set of DMT stones a couple of sharpmaker sticks white and grey that i use to finish my edges also gonna be making myself a strop soon . Thanks
You seem to have the right equipment to sharpen D2. Its a great blade steel. Gets and hold a very sharp edge. Best of luck with it. Some have said that it is harder to sharpen. I find that it takes a little more time then some of the lower carbon steels but have pacience and you should be pleased with the results. Its one of my favorite steels.
I use the same equipment you are proposing to use. I find it puts a very satisfactory edge on D2. But I haven't been able to get my D2 blades as sharp as I can get my carbon steel blades.
I just got my .400 thick D2 chopper to whittle hair using my DMT continuous stones! Compared to most of my knives in A2 steel I would say it is a little harder to get to this level of sharpness. I have also have read that, "D2 takes a lousy edge and holds it forever". I have to disagree with the ,"lousy edge" part.
D2 will get as sharp as anything else with the right tools, it just takes longer. You seem to have what's needed but I would also suggest a strop with diamond compound.
