Can somebody shoot me a link to when D2 may have first been created or used? I have it in my head that it is a WWI vintage tool steel but I can't find any references for when it was first made. Thanks

This steel was developed during the latter stages of World War II and has seen heavy use as a machine steel ever since. Technically not a stainless steel, D2 has a chromium content of 12 percent, which places it on the verge of qualifying as stainless, but its high carbon content prevents it from doing so.
