DA/LCC Question from a Lefty

I have been trying to figure out which MT auto to buy this week. I have narrowed it down to the L-UDT and the DA/LCC. Here is my question. How hard is it to activate the bolster with your left hand? I played with one for about half a second but didn't spend enough time with it to make an intelligent desision. On the other hand the L-UDT has a reversable pocket clip, and the button is easily activatd with my pointer finger. I want the LCC because even though I am an LEO, it is a bit more PC in public. I can open it like a regular one hander. BTW/ How durable is the action. Will it survive continuous one hand openings with out damaging the auto mode? Somebody please shed some light on this for me.

I have been told it is possible to trigger my LCC D/A left handed, but it does not strike me as easy. The bolster release requires a fair bit of pressure, from a thumb. I think a finger may struggle and as a LEO do you want to be struggling in a 'situation'? Its fine for the collector or the 'KnifeKnut wanabee', but I would not advise you consider it. Thats just my opinion mind, I just don't want to be involved in offering advice and find out later you got hurt or killed because I told you it would be fine.

I have heard from people who have fired the action over 4000 times, no problems. Mine has had about 500 and it is perfect.

While I understand you desire to own the D/A and the hidden bolster, I would visit a shop and have a good long play with it. I would not risk it myself however, it is an AMAZING knife for us righty's however.

I don't know about the other blades, but I would look at all the options first. Is there a particular reason why you need an auto? I got one for the 'toy' factor and as it is a normal knife is other ways (D/A), also I wanted an LCC, so it seemed natural to me. I can open my Spyderco knives just as quickly as my LCC D/A. While I have tried to get my LCC to fire by accident, it won't. I even made the mistake of dropping it 3 feet to a hard floor, all that happened was the blade opened about 2 inches (the ball detent is a little weak in holding the knife shut, probably as a result of it being an auto). The LCC did NOT fire. Repeated knocks and bangs have never caused this knife to fire for me. I am just about happy to carry it now clipped to my pocket rather than in the pouch. While I have no worries about the stability and reliability of this knife and the fit and finish are amazing (no damage from the drop at all) I would carry a Spyderco model knife in your job, with a manual it is one less thing to worry about. You may need a knife to save your life, it is unlikely I will ever been in that possition. Hope you don't think I am trying to tell you what to do and I realise you must have considered this already. Hope I have helped in a small way.

Thanx General. Here is my reasoning.

A) When on duty, my weapon is on my left side. I always carry my knife in my right pocket (right now it's a Camillus EDC). For this purpose the LCC-D/A would be great. If I am in a weapon retention situation I can activate the auto action with the right hand.
B) For normal purposes (off duty) It will be in my left pocket. I can then use the MA function for day to day stuff.

What I am curious about is if I want to activate the auto action with my left hand. General (or anyone else reading this)- could you do me a favor and just play around with it for a bit and see if it is a burdon? I don't need an auto for my job. I was actually was pondering buying the LCC tactical MA. I just have that inner need to buy an auto. Should I just forget about it and buy the L-UDT? Personnaly the EDC I carry now is perfect, but I want a MT.

Hi!

Hope that all is well :)
I have NO problem in firing my DA with my lefthand, as easy as firing it with my righthand. (i do use bali-songs a lot.. ;) )
I can't imagine that you'd have any problems with it.
If this would be a [weapon] backup then i'd might choose another knife.

I do not own a L-UDT (yet) but if i'm not mistaken the clip isn't reversible, the handle is drilled and tapped on both sides but you'll need another clip to use it for lefthand carry.
If you look at the design and consider the placement of the attachment holes it makes it quite obvious that the clip wouldn't be useable on the left side.
Look here: http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/l-udt.htm look closely on the shape of the clip and how it curves to follow the shape off the handle.
Edit!! I do think that it'd might work to reverse the clip, but i don't think that it'll feel very comfy though.

I think that you'd be pleased with the Lcc, it's a great looking knife and it might be considered as pretty by the sheeple... :)

I really liked the looks of the LCC/DA but being a lefty found it cumbersome at best to use.

Not a bad knife overall, just didn't suit me..

I tried it a number of ways and this is what I found.

1. The only way I felt I could do this was to hold the knife in my palm and press the bolster with the index finger. This felt unatural and awkward to say the least.
2. Opening the knife using the thumb studs was easy left or right handed. I would do this!
3. While I am getting better with my left hand, thanks to my Bali, I am on a planitary scale of distance from being ambidext:rolleyes:
4. I understand the 'need';) for an auto. Will you ever need to fire it up using your left hand or just be able to open it with your left hand? If you only need the options, I would say go for it then! Just don't expect to be able to open it using the auto feature as well (unless you put in the hours as a Balisong Knut:p . Great knife though.

General,

Thanx very much for performing the little test for me. I am pretty ambidextrous. I am going to buy the DA. Worse comes to worse I will have to use the MA function in my left hand. At least I will be happy that I own it. :p

Lanny,

Dang buddy, I didn't know that you are also a "Lefty". Being a "Lefty" is one reason why I haven't bothered with any "autos" yet. (...Aside from them being "illegal" to carry here in Washington State...:(.).

...Now, if REKAT would make an ambidextrious DA Sifu...:).

Hey Dann,

DA/SIFU? That's nuts. It would probably jump out of your hands. I have become used to operating autos made for righty's. Ya just gotta get that pointer finger working properly. I'll let you guys know how the DA LCC works out for me. Now I need to decide if I want the one with the Damascus blade or not. (probably not). Would the Damascus rust easily or is it stainless?

There actually was someone long ago on the forums desiging A drop in device to convert your sifu to auto. I think you pulled the lock button to fire it. As I remember there was even pictures. If you are interested you may want to search the archives.

I'm a fellow Lefty, and have no problem with my LCC D/A. IMO, the best thing you can do once you get your LCC, is to find your "sweet spot" on the bolster. Do this by opening the knife in the AUTO MODE Then, AFTER you have released the tension on the spring, and the knife is open, "play" with the bolster release. You'll find that there is spot on the bolster that opens the knife the easiest (each knife is just a little different). Then practice useing your left hand to open it. Within ten minutes you'll see that it doesn't matter which hand you use, the LCC works great either way.

Thanx KOMODO! I will do that. Now I just have to wait till friday to buy the knife. I'll keep you all updated.

Glad I could help in some way! It is quite a knife my friend;) , YOU WILL LOVE IT:D !!!

Calm down Wayne:rolleyes: ! Sorry about that;). I love mine to bits!:p

I actually have a very hard time firing my LCC DA left-handed. Mine has a tough opening in the right hand also. I have either destroyed the nerves in the tip of my right thumb, or built up a callous(sp?) and can now easily fire right handed. But left handed? I've done it, but there's no way I could become proficient at it without starting a weight lifting program for my left hand and fingers.

This is actually a good thing, as there will never be any accidental opening, or "dry firing" after the blade has been opened manually. Like others have said, as long as you are able to open it manually left-handed, there will be no problem.

I know you will enjoy your knife, as it's one of the best buys out there. I'm thinking of getting some customization on mine, to spice it up a little.

Let us know when you get yours, how you like it. I'd stick with the black blade, too. I don't think the damascus would hold up too well as a daily carry.
