Anyone have one or know anything about them? I have the chance to get a 7mo male that is supposed to have some sort of fancy bloodline for free. I'm a pit bull kind of guy (bull dogs in general work for me), so the idea of having what I see as a "yapping football" doesn't sit well with me. Now the problem, the dog is free, calm, doesn't hardly bark and the worst part.......my daughter wants him. No other dogs in the house and a 4yo daughter. Good? Bad?

Nothing personal, but I don't really care for Dachshunds. Fancy bloodlines don't mean a thing. If it is so fancy, why are they giving away a 7 month old male? Is he show quality? If he was, they would be showing him. You're hopefully not planning on breeding him just because he has fancy bloodlines, are you?

If you like bull dogs, I say stick with bull dogs. Their temperaments and needs are not the same and you are going to experience a lot of different stuff with a Dachshund.

I think a 4 y/o is too young to have a dog of her own. Children should always be supervised around any type of dogs, due to unexpected behaviors that could result. I'd give your daughte 3-4 more years before allowing her to have a dog of her own.

Mongo would be a good one to talk to about disposition of this breed of dog. I believe they have some health issues, but Mongo would know better. You might want to PM him.

My first dog was a hot dog. Now I am a big dog (usky, etc) person, but that was the biggest small dog I have ever known.

It was very loyal to the family, very protective, not snappy ( I was five) and tougher than heck.

It did have back problems, and evenually required surgery.

I still remember watching it run an Irish Setter, an Lab and a German Shepard out of the yard on three seperate occasions. They must have thought he had a concealed carry permit or something.

In my experience they were a good dog for a kid.

I've had a lot of dogs including German shepards, huskies, collies, malamutes, irish wolf hounds, and last but not least...Dachshunds. One thing I can say for sure is that they have the most personality of any dog i've ever had. They are a blast to play with and are very loyal.

Pretty tough little dogs... HOWEVER... if you get him, take at least $2000 (maybe even 3K) and put it in a special bank account. Leave it alone... until that day comes that he herniates a vertebral disc against his spinal cord. You will need to act fast, and quite possibly have to have surgery done on him. You will need that 2-3K then. Otherwise, they are kinda cool for little midget-legged barking machines. (honest, I DO like them!)

Your daughter will get over it. Buy her an ice cream cone and rent some Disney movies. She is far too young to take care of a dog . . . and Dachsunds ain't that great . . . and someone will need to take care of it for about 10 years.

The best dog I ever had was a "Dachsy" named Anna.
S.Brown was right they have tremendous personality , they are little dogs with huge hearts , willing to take on adversaries many times thier size.
A little Dachshund history , they were originally bred for hunting badgers , the German word for badger is Dachel or Teckel , hence the name Dachshund , or Teckhund as some folks call them, if you know some about animals you know that badgers are one of the meanest , most 'standoffish' animals on this rock , so imagine the dog bred to hunt them.
They are smart , mischevious and stubborn as mules but that is what makes them such a special dog.

Yea they can have problems like hips and spine but so can many dogs costing thousands of dollars like purebred Labs , English Bulldogs , German Shepherds and so forth. I would not let that stand in the way of getting an excellent companion , anyone that says Dachsy's are "foo-foo dogs" because of thier diminutive size does not know dogs.

My friend Tim had one named Bruno ( I got my Dachshund pup from his sister ) , this dog was one mean sucker if he did not know you , there are some funny stories of Bruno that still make me chuckle to this day. :)

If there is one drawback to them , two people I have known that have had Dachshunds did not raise them right , they turned into cowering little guys that would pee if you tried to pick them up , they were skittish which is unusual for Dachshunds , so do not holler at them or smack them when they are pups , you will scar thier little brain.

I would suggest looking at some sites pertaining to Dachshunds and how to deal effectivly with thier temper and personality , if you do it right you will have one of the most loyal and loving of friends you could ask for.

Something I did not add in the first post that perhaps I should have. I've had dogs as long as I can remember (not that I'm "that" old at 27:D ) and ran my own kennel for 4 years while in Louisiana. While I had my kennel, I also had my oldest daughter right there with me working with the dogs and had two of the dogs still around after we moved and my youngest was born. What were the dogs? Pit bulls. If you listen to the media and the average mis-informed/ignorant person, by all rights my dogs should have eaten my children as well as all the others that lived by us. With that said, I'm not too worried about the ages of the kids, nor the "maybe that dog isn't the best for kids". The dog will be mine to take care of, with the kids to keep it company. I played with this dog for about 2 hours today and watched as it played with the kids. No signs of aggression, even with food involved. Does that mean that I trust the dog 100%? No I do not, but I did get a good feeling from him. My questions were more of the health concerns and any special needs they may have.
I would very much like to have another bull dog, but they are not viewed very well in my area and the insurance would kill me. The dog belongs to a very good friend who is moving and would rather the dog go to us than a stranger, hence the cheap price of $0.00.

Mongo- PM sent about VM school.

My girlfriend loves dachshunds, had them growing up and has one now. If your daughter's got her heart set on it and can help take care of the dog I say go for it.

male dachshunds are actually pretty dang protective for a small dog. I had one literally go for my throat one time when I was leaning over trying to wake up (another) old gf of mine.

My experience:

Weener dogs are yappy little mean bastards that are difficult to bond with and are prone to unpredictable flashes of temper and agression.

I'd rather get a nice lab or pitbull mix from the pound.

My favorite all-time breed are rough collies - beautiful animals with incredibly gentle and loving temprements. And their protective and herding instincts seem a good match to children.

do not holler at them or smack them when they are pups

Good advice with any dogs. When we had to discipline ours, we told them they were bad dogs, go away, I don't want to see you. They slunk off crying. Wait five minutes, bring them back, they'll cooperate. Violence just confuses and embitters them.

willing to take on adversaries many times thier size.

That is SO true. I swear that these dogs are are completely unaware of their small stature. They think that they are at least 12x bigger than they actually are. One of mine decided that it could take on our neighbors malamute. It was very wrong. I had a unique bond with this malamute from taking care of him when he was young. I ended up restraining it without any bite marks before it swallowed my little dachshund whole.

I love dachshunds and started to get one when we got our rat terrier mix. I was raised up with doxies and the first one we ever had when I was a kid had to be shut in a room before my old man busted my rear because he would take the old man on in a flash. Their biggest con is their long back and needing to be careful with it and their biggest pro besides having a heart great dane size is that they don't smell like dogs as such. They do get an odor when they need a bath but it isn't that strong doggy odor you get with other dogs.
I've been trying to talk the wife into trying to find a doxie to keep our rat terrier company but she hasn't yielded yet.:( :o ;)

Seen one kill pitbull once............got stuck in it's throat !!!!

I have two Dashies and that is darn funny! Mine are 9 yrs and 8 yrs old and have been tough, durable little dogs. I have seen one of mine halfway in a German Shepard's mouth. Only his rear legs and tail were showing. His tail was wagging like it was supper time! He loves BIG dogs.

They told me this was a free Dachsund.....

Only a dachshund would be so mean and ignorant as to attack a gentle old guy like this one:

cant beat a free dog-thats my story and im sticking to it
I wouldn't beat any dog, except maybe a yapping dachshund, and even then they're built more for kicking.

Dachhunds were designed to hunt badgers. They will go into a woodchuck hole , kill the woodchuck and bring it out !!!

Dachhunds were designed to hunt badgers.
I've heard that before, and it's exactly how they act. Not the behavior or temprement I'd look for in a family pet...

I'm sure there are exceptions though. I even met a nice toy poodle once. :)
