Dad needs a birthday present

I'm recently new to the wonderful world of knives and just got a Spyderco Delica. I quickly realized the advantages of carrying a knife around for little jobs like opening packages and taking down boxes :D . My dad's birthday is coming up and I think he would also benefit from EDCing a knife. He would probably use it for some light tasks, nothing that abusive on a knife. He's a pretty practical guy, and, strangely, his practicality has actually kept him from getting a knife. Something about he didn't think he'd ever use it and therefore couldn't justify buying one. So my first requirement would be relatively low price (around $50 or so) just in case he leaves it in his drawer and never looks at it again. Other than that:

1) I'd like to get him a Spyderco. I'm not determined to get him a Spydie, and I'm not against other companies at all, but after seeing how their company functions I do have a great deal of respect for them. And I just love my delica :)

2) It needs to be pretty small. In an off-hand conversation, I asked my mom what she thought he'd want, and she said that my Delica might even be slightly too big for him.

3) It also needs to be pretty thin. I mean, he doesn't exactly wear tight pants, but if he can feel it in his pocket, he probably won't wear it.

I've thought about the Calypso Jr. when it comes back out (I believe it was scheduled to come out this month?). I'm worried that a jester or lady bug might be a little too small. But other than that, I'm open to ideas. Thanks for helping out a knife knewbie.

You can get the calypso Jr grey over at New Graham for $40. They re a nice little knife, I just picked one up for $25 at a local shop. I love it, and it is quite small.

The Spyderco Cricket is a nice lightweight knife. ATS-55 steel, 1 7/8" blade, weighs only 1.25 oz. (The cricket has been discontinued but you can still find it on the net for less than 40 bucks)

If he's practical, look into SAK's. Our Bob Quinlan made a SAK selector here: http://www.october.com/cgi-bin/vic_select.cgi. That way you could get the tools he needs into it and no more. :D He'd also be able to forget about maintaining it and it should stay in OK condition whereas other blades may stain/rust relatively easily.

SAK's and multitools are a good idea. One more thing to chew on :) What do you guys think of the kiwi? Seems like it might be a good size...

I was going to suggest the Kiwi. It is probably Spdyerco's best small gentlemen's knife. It cuts well, the grip is quite good, and you get a premium blade steel (VG-10) that will really hold an edge.

My other recommendation, also echoing sentiments already expressed, would be a small to medium SAK in Alox. The Alox models are thinner and more elegant than typical SAKs.

My favorite in this category is the Cadet (mine is copper colored). It's as thin as most pen knives, but includes a blade, bottle opener, can opener, large screwdriver, small screwdriver, and nail file.

I second the SAK, something in their product line for everyone. Or Queen Cutlery a traditional pattern with stag scales. Cool...

Heh, sounds like I have a good list of spydies to think about. And I've been checking out some SAKs..... On the bright side, I dont' think I can go wrong with any of these suggestions. Makes decision making hard, but not a bad problem to have :) Thanks for the responses guys, if you keep getting ideas, then keep them coming :)

I liked the Kiwi--the wharnecliffe blade is really useful and it's a nice drop in the pocket knife. Although the keychain knife/tool suggest by Jeff may be better for someone who isn't used to carrying a knife. If it's attached to their keys then it's more likely to be with them when they need it and then later they can move on to something bigger that they'll actually grab when they're going somewhere. The Squirt P4/S4 is good for that too. You can accompany it with a Photon microlight or something.

My son decided a last year that he wanted to get me a knife for Fathers day. My parents were in town just prior to that so they said they would take him to a locak knife shop (Grand Prairie Knives) and let him choose one. I made a list of knives that I liked that were moderately priced which ranged from the Becker Necker to the Spyderco SS Kiwi. He ultimately chose the Kiwi in Jigged bone (yes my parents are quite generous in indulging him). Point is my dad liked the knife so well he talked to My mom about it a few times on the trip home so she surprised him with one for Fatehrs day the following weekend.

He loves the knife and has EDC'd it ever since! You may want to check out the Kiwi great little knife with a touch of nestalgia with the bone handles. Your father may take to it like mine did. The SS version is a classy little piece as well.
