went for a short hike with my daughter yesterday.
She likes to carry her own pack, but as we were only going out for a few hours we just used mine.
So without her pack weighing her down she took off like a rocket:

It's illegal to light fires in the wood in my area at the time, but i figgured she could still learn how to process some firewood to get a little practice for later.
Letting her baton a nasty log with my RtakII (I know i need a 9. I can't not have a nine):

Next chore on the list was making some shavings for tinder. The 15 is great at this:

Her turn. She'll need a little practice. I think i'll have to get her an 11 or 14 of her own:

All in all a nice little field trip. I hope to get time for a longer trip next weekend.
On weekdays i'm usually at the gym or the shooting range after work, so weekends are our playtime:)

Looks like a great time. I wish I had taken the time to teach my kids about camping & all that the outdoors has to offer.
Good for you and your little girl!

My dad used to do stuff like this with me, and I think I grew up to be a well rounded woman. Good job on your part, that's awesome!

Right on man! I love Daddy/Daughter time!

Cute little girl, cool dog, nice knives.

Do you guys have bears like we do here? Like in in the northern United States and Canada we have very big brown bears and grizzly bears and farther north we have polor bears. The rest of the United Stats has black bears. Do you guys stil have them or have they all been wipped out?

Being a dad of 6 yr old girl, it is always heart warming to see such daddy-daughter time photos in the outdoors. Enjoy every bit of it - they'll grow up faster than you think. Thanks for sharing the photos.

I got her started on a Delica trainer which she presently wears around her neck in the house. I'll probably have her handle a live blade on our next hike.

Yeah, we do have some great times out there. She loves hiking, camping and fishing. But she told me she will not come hunting. Doesn't want me to shoot the animals.

That is awesome! My daughter was never much of an camper. She was more of a Disney Princess that her mom spoiled rotten. Luckily my two boys came along and they like spending time with dad. Enjoy these times. They are over way too quickly.

Looks like a good time... its great to get out even better when you have loved ones go with enjoy the time with your daughter

adorable kid -- good on you for taking her with into the woods.

Sorry for the late respose, but i've been kinda busy lately. With work, the birth of my son comming up shortly, trying to bulk up from 180 to about 220-240 lbs and shooting practice time isn't one of the things i have a lot of.

Anyways, thanks for all the nice response. It's highly appreciatied. And i'll try to get more pics out there soon. Was thinking about a little camping/fishing trip at my special little place a few hours walk from my house in a couple of weeks.

To answer evildicks question, yeah, we do have brown bears in Norway, but there's not many of them and there hasn't been sightings in my area for several decades as far as i know.

If you keep letting her take that pack with her she's gonna get to be really fast when she's not carrying it. Those little leg muscles are going to become toned iron.

It's also nice that she got to use the RTAK-II. Kids need responsible access to knives.

Thought i'd bring this one back up. We've been out a lot, but i've been to lazy to post pics and stuff.
However a couple of days ago we decided to go out and make my little fishing spot a little more comfortable.

My daughter decided to gather some tinder, even though we wren't supposed to have a fire due to VERY dry weather and bigtime fire hazard.

While she was at it i cut down a dead pine tree to chop up and make a bench. Turns out splitting a log that's 4.5-5ft long with an RTAKII takes some work:P

I spendt a long time batoning the crap out of the RTAK while Mira passed time swinging around in the trees and messing with the dogs.

About one hour, 4 sigaretes, 2 cofee breaks, a lot of cursing and a massive blister later:

So, 4 hours turned into a short hike, a bench a firepit and good times :)

Next time we'll be making a semi permanet shelter over the bench and firepit so it'll take a couple of minutes to get the tarp in place and we can hang out here and have a good time even if it's raining.

Nice work with the RTAK, I guess it's a lot more durable than all those youtube naysayers would have you believe.

It is the older 1095 or the newer 5160 model?

Charlie_K: Thanks. It's not the first time i've been sure it's gonna break or warp on me the way it bends going through those knots, but it's held up surprisingly well.
This is good ol' 1095. I didn't know they made a 5160 RTAKII. I thought they only started using that on the Spec plus genII models.

Dexwithers: Family outdoors stuff is the poo ;)
Luckily i have a daughter who would rather go hiking and fishing than run around at some stupid mall.
