Well this one has been in the works for quite some time. I started it well before last July.
Dad wanted a knife. This will be his second, I made him one ages ago when I was starting out, and I must say this is a hell of a lot better.
He wanted one with which he could compete at the cutting competitions if he wanted to so had to follow the usual size limits.
Original plan was for an S or part D guard, but that idea kinda changed when part of the guard started to delam when I was trying to bend it. Not hot enough.
So it was either start over or change, and he opted to just change it.
He picked out giraffe bone for the handle...which ended up being a headache =P I've not used it before, so it was a learning process.
I mortised out for the tang, glued together and went to shaping. It kept popping apart on me.
So not trusting the glues at all at this point I decided to order some corby bolts from Jantz. Not used those either before. They worked quite nicely.
Another problem arose when I got the knife glued together. I let it sit and harden up...so I thought.
Noticed a little squeeze outon handle and removed it. Next day it was back. Kept happening so I ended up removing the bolts as they hadn't set up either, put it int he vise and yanked till the handle finally came loose.
Lot of glue clean up. I'd not gotten a good mix on my epoxy, so it didn't get fully hard =[
I had an idea and the second glue up went great. I decided I needed something so I could better get an equal mix. A measuring cup! I took one of the little plastic cups from the top of a medicine bottle. Measured resin to one line, and then hardener to the double of the first line and mixed.
I think I'll buy a bunch of those cups.
All in all it turned out pretty decent. I know little spots where things could have gone better, but for one that fought me the whole way I'm happy with it, and dad seems very pleased with it.
It certainly has some heft to it as well.
