I was flippin' around one of the BM42's about 2 minutes ago, when the bite handle goes sailing across the room.  All I can find is the female pin, and I assume it's counterpart must have been out for a while. I adjust them just about every other day, and I'm just so shocked that this happened. Nothing is broken mind you, just misplaced. So has anyone else had this happen to them??

Well, it's no real problem I guess. Looks like a trip to the Bali ER for some minor surgery from Dr. Angie. :( He needed a tune-up anyhow...

Use Locktite. You shouldn't have to adjust every other day.

Well, that had occured to me, but can't BM's warranty department do something to tighten it up? It was quite loose before this happened, and I figured, why not kill 2 birds with one stone? Has anybody here sent in a bm4x for tweeking... can they really make them tight again??? If not, I'll just do as you suggested and do it myself, using Locktite of course.

If the pivot pin fell off by itself, you've got a bigger issue. The male screw could fall out and the handle should still stay in place. Loctite only helps keep the male screw from disappearing in normal maintenance. Those pivot pins require some careful fitting in because they aren't smooth barreled like the Tachyon's. Chuck's site has an article on this:

http://www.balisongcollector.com/bm42screws.html

When I disassembled my 4x's I need to pin punch out the pivot screw as indicated in the above article. Mer once suggested that if you do disassemble the BM 4x's a lot, to aid future disassembly, you should file off the grooves of the pivot pin. Which now leads me back to the original point: How did you wind up with a female pin that simply falls out? Should not happen. Something wore out.

Take a look at it, and if it's fairly smooth, ask for a complete set. If the pivot pin's groove looks ok, then the problem is with the handle pivot holes. And unless you're willing to hammer in the pivot pin, and void your warranty, I'd send it back to BM have it looked at.

I've sent both of my 4x's for some tweaking this past week but I haven't recieved them back yet:( .

Tony, I honestly don't know how the female pin fell out either. I was just doing some normal ricochets when *zing*, the handles flies and the male is at my feet. I put the whole lot back together (minus the missing pin), and it flipped just fine.  With some work, I got it back out to inspect the grooves as you suggested, and they're there, I have no reference as to how deep they should be, but they're there.

I think I'm just going to mail it off, especially since I noticed the tang pin is jiggling.... again.

By the way, nobody answered my other question: Can BM tighten up a loose 42, and more importantly, is that covered in my warranty ;)???

It should be. As long as you let them know there's too much gap in the handle fork, even with the torx screw screwed all the way down. And the handle alignment is out of whack. As always, talk to Angie.....

BTW, I bet BM would also be real interested in finding out why that pivot screw just fell out like that. They took great pains to design the pivot screw the way they did, and that's not one of the anticipated results, from an engineering point of view.

Of course, if you had loctited the screws, it might have helped :D

If you were adjusting the pivot screw every other day, maybe it just got worn out? Yep Lock-Tite.
