Making my first dagger in 15N20 / 1084 damascus. About to heat treat.
How thick is too thick before heat treat?
Will the extra mass prevent proper hardening?
I recall a post (failing to find it now) warning about grinding a dagger too much before heat treat, or the warping and twisting can make it difficult to recover.
I'm fine with doing more grinding later. Also hoping to etch all martensite at the end.
Current dimensions are about 0.3" thick at ricasso, 1.5" wide. Hollow ground to 0.125" at the edge.
Distal taper to about 0.15" at tip.
I read the good advice here, but only after I was well into the project.
