Daggers?

I ground out a real nice dagger blade and got to thinking. How many people out there are gonna have a use for a dagger with a 12" by 1 1/2" blade? So I am considering cutting about 5 1/2" off the tip of the blade and making a push dagger out of it and then finishing the other 6 1/2" as a straight dagger. Just thought I'd see what you folks thought before I started cuttin. Is there much of a market for push daggers? Also, would it be best to only sharpen one edge of the knife/knives for legal considerations? Thanks for reading my thread!!!

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Lots of people collect daggers, I have 8 in my display cases myself. See what your missing by not collecting knives Mike?

A big dagger sounds great, but it's almost a sword at that size

In Canada there are no specific restrictions against double edged blades, but push daggers are specifically forbidden under the Criminal Code.

Mike, I know I don't have a use for it, but since you already have it made I'd like to see you finish it, rather than cut it up into something else. Would I buy a 12" Dagger, yeah if it was beatiful in design, fit and finish and if it was made by someone who was following their own vision. I don't have a use for most of my knives, I consider them to be Art, and I'll tell you this no Art was ever created by a Committee.

In my Drawer of Things I Collect But Can't Carry Around, I would much rather see a long dagger than a push dagger. As far as laws go, it's different everywhere, but I'd guess there's some form of restrictions on either item just about anywhere you go.

I agree with Phil.
My favorite knives in my collection are daggers and slipjoints. Plan on picking up at least one of each up during the 'weekend' and ordering at least two more for the same 'weekend' next year.

In my opinion, they represent the most difficult fixed blades and folders (in general) for a maker to execute.

I have about twice as many swords in my collection as knives, and most of them are double edged. There are a lot of us out there into historical and fantasy stuff. Go nuts, it's a great creativity outlet.

I, too, am a collector of daggers, boot knives and other double-edged blades. I can say that I've always been drawn to the full-handled versions and haven't ever been interested in the push-daggers. My vote is go with the big dagger.

Any chance of seeing the finished product posted here in picture form?

Hey Mike!! Definitely go with the big dagger. Your big bowie that you made was a milestone piece! This dagger could prove to be yet another milestone. Soon you'll be making nothign but high end collector pieces!! Go for it!

Don't cut it down! Well at least not until you post a pic of the full sized dagger. I checked out your site. Nice bowies.

I love daggers!
They are often the most graceful and beautiful of knives.

Do I use one for my EDC?
Nope! To me, the double edge is more of a hinderance than a help, they just don't fit my style, but I HAVE several, and I'm looking for more.
Build the big dagger, look to historical and period pieces for inspiration and make something beautiful.

(Push daggers suck!)
