They tell you not to do it but I did it any way to my Gov-Tach. Now it may have just been blind luck but this is how I did it. First I cut the handle lengthwise which was wrong. First you tape the blade up so you don't cut yourself then cut the handle lengthwise. Then I immersed everything in a container of water including the plastic washers. Leaving the last three inches exposed like sticking out of the water I took a torch and heated only the tang very lightly. This is to loosen the Lock-Tight or what ever they use as a glue. After it cooled for a while I took a screw driver and stuck it in the slot of the nut that holds the pommel on. The screw driver did not fit very well so I filed it until it fit perfect. With the screw driver at an angle in the slot of the nut I taped the screw driver lightly (counter clockwise) the nut did not come loose. So back to the water and more heat. After repeating this several times the nut came loose. No damage to the nut or pommel because I took my time making sure not to get things hot and tapping only very lightly. Now I did this because I am putting a leather washer handle on my Gov-Tach but I took an awful big chance because if the nut had not come loose I would have been stuck with a handle with a slit down the middle and a Gov-Tach with no handle. But because it work out I'm glad I did it because its starting to come out looking good.

BubbaGanew,
Hi. I'm new to bladeforums, but I was wondering, how difficult is it to make that stacked leather handle? It looks much nicer than the regular Gov Tac. I never gave the Gov Tac a second thought, but now that I've seen what can be done to it, I may consider one in the future. Anyway, back to the main point, could you let me know the process of making the stacked leather handle? Any special tools? If there's a place you could point me to on the web that tells how to do it, that'd be great.

I don't think heating it with a torch "destroys" the temper. I think its how hot you get it that "destroys" the temper. I used the torch because it was convenient.
