What do you knifeknuts use and why?

Does anyone use a knife or a straight razor?

I go with the Gillette Mach 3. I like to try new things, it doesn't nick me near the jugular like every other blade I've tried, it cleans great, and leaves my face baby-bottom smooth after cutting once with the grain and once against.

Bic, black handles, forget the name. Considering the price, I think the Mach 3's are overrated.

One of those Norelco electrics with the built in lotion dispenser. First electric that I have owned I didn't hate.

I have a thick beard and getting 3 shaves to a Gilette sensor blade wasn't cutting it (no pun intended

Knife Content: Anyone ever shaved or been shaved with a straight-razor?

I got a shave from a barber in Corpus Christi once. I was in town for a buddy's (Naval Pilot) wedding and went for a haircut and thought "What the hell?" Took a long time and was nowhere near as close as even a cheap disposable. Still the warm lather was nice.

Oh and if you ever go to a barber in a military town, expect a short haircut! LOL.

I sometime use a Sensor Excel, and sometimes a Mach 3. I cut myself a long time ago; now if I shave too close every day, it wants to start hurtin' again, and if I wait more than 3 days between shaves, it pulls too much, and STILL hurts! So I usually don't use the Mach 3 on my throat. Once I used my Xl Voyager at a sleepover just to look cool. I think it worked... Either that or I just scared everybody.

I have a corded Norelco, but it doesn't shave for CRAP!

Mach III, been using them since they first came out. Get about 12 shaves per blade, all of them great. A fine product in my opinion.

Prior to using them I used the Sensor Excel and changed blades every Sunday.

I also used the Sensor until trying the Mach III. Mach III shaves great, but I wish it trimmed more precisely. I keep a single edged BIC throwaway on hand to trim sideburns and mustache.

Thanks for the comments. I usually use the Mach 3 for about a week. Once it goes, it deteriorates quickly.

I once saw a guy who threw away his blade after every shave!

I've got a Dovo straight razor that I use occasionally. It does better than my electric razor, but not nearly as well as any good safety razor. I sometimes shave a bit with one of my knives, 1095, 12C27, and AUS-8 knives can do a pretty good job. You really want to use a hot lather for this sort of thing. I'm usually not looking for a super close shave and try and avoid the high-tech multiblade safety razors. I tend to get in-grown whiskers when I shave too close. I prefer an electric razor or basic single-blade Bic.

Hi Y'all,

I usually use a Sensor Excel, but I have on occasion used a Mach 3. I just don't like it for some reason.

As a corollary to this thread, I think that it is prudent to repeat the warning which all males usually receive from their fathers, but since every once in a while someone gets missed, here goes.

NEVER use the razor a woman keeps in the shower on your face. It will undoubtedly leave your face in a woeful state. They purposely use the damn things until they are almost too dull to cut, so they won't accidentally cut themselves, then leave them that way.

Don't believe me? Just surreptitiously change the blade in the razor your SO keeps in the shower/bath. You will hear shrieks, words you didn't even think she knew, and when you rush in, she will be sitting or standing in pink water. heh heh heh

I don't suppose I need add that you should disavow any knowledge of how the blade became sharp. And you had better be convincing.

Remember, only use this knowledge for good!

I shave with a straight razor.

I find i cut myself much less now than i used to with my "safety" razor.

Re: Walt's comments: I think I would want a dull razor too if I had to use it while standing in a "crane" position on wet porcelain! LOL!

Had to bandage my SO the other day from a bad cut in the shower -- she had to use her hands to remove the piece of flesh from the razor so she could go on shaving. Ouch!

May I recommend that you, as knife aficianados, learn to sharpen, use & maintain a straight razor. It is a valuable profect for a knife nut. Even an "adventure". helps with understanding edges, attention to detail and focus of attention.

I learned a long time ago to shave in the shower. The hot water running over the skin while you shave really softens the beard, and in my case makes for a really close shave, with a lot less discomfort. Try it.

"How do I stop this thing?"

I have also been a big fan of the Mach III since it came out.
I would however like to try out a good straight razor because when I was in the Marine Corps the barber always used a straight razor for the sideburns and back of the neck.
Sal, do you (or anyone else) know of a good source for straight razors? Maybe a Spyderazor??
