So.....I don't know what got in to me this weekend. Must have been too many youtube videos or something :D

But, I decided I wanted to try out using a Dakota Fire Pit. Seen many pictures, many description, nod my head and say "Yeah that makes sense." But, I never took the time to actually dig one.

My wife is a real trooper. We already have a 3' fire pit in the backyard (we live in the city, mind you). Most folks have the fancy little expensive chimneas and all that. Not us......I have a regular cooking setup :D

So, I tell the wife, I am going to dig a fire pit today (By "I" I mean the two oldest kids are going to dig a firepit :D ). She says "We already have one." I say "Yeah, but not like this." She just shakes her head knowing there is no stopping us and says "Our poor yard." Did I mention that we live in the city?

Anyway, I give the two oldest shovels. One gets the folding US shovel, the other the folding Swedish shovel. I wish I took pictures of them digging, because it was hilarious.

Here it is burning.

I actually had to dig the smaller air hole. As you can tell, we have lots of roots in our yard, and there was no way the kiddies were going to get that part done.

It was quite cool to see in action. There was virtually no smoke from the thing. And you could see the coals and flame being blasted by air from the intake.

It was getting close to dinner (white bean chili was in the crock pot), so I decided to cook some cornbread on the fire in the billy.

I was going to cut some green sticks to cover the hole. But, I got lazy and just covered it with the grill from my little Weber Smokey Joe.

The cornbread turned out great, and it was neat to see this little setup.

Anyone else have any pictures of doing one? Or any experience doing stuff with these?

No real need for them here, but they're the best for cooking on. Always liked the Dakota hole. First learned it in the Boy Scouts. We used to carry a small piece of grille for that very purpose.
Good way to have a small fire inside a shelter(like just inside a lean-to) as long as it's not smoking bad.

Edit: for some reason I keep thinking about this. Maybe I'll make one next week if it's not too rocky where I'm at.
