spent my last $20 (i am now a man with $0 ) and put some fuel into the truck, so i could get the hell out of the cesspool that is Vancouver. I hate it here, i really do, the people are self absorbed and just plain stupid, basic food stuffs are overpriced and poor quality, the traffic and drivers are worse than some lawless countries, if i see one more driver with texting with a cell phone i'm going to lose it, the meth and crack addicts are everywhere, the city government and the provincial government continue to wreck the city and province with greed, the Transit Authority continues to drain money out of drivers pockets, plus all the corruption.........on and on and on, i'm just plain fed up. :barf:

so i loaded up the So-Tech Go-Bag with my billy can , fire kit, tea bags, food bars, GB small forest ax, Handley Bladesmith TAC-EDC fixed blade, SAS jacket and a flashlight. On my belt was my Scrapyard5 and my survival pouch. Around my neck was an Idaho Knife Works "Hunters Companion" and whistle. Warmed up the truck and hit the road.

After taking an hour to get out of the bloody city (normally a 10 minute drive) thanks to all the traffic and road construction lane closures, i got onto the highway and calmed down. The soothing purr of the engine at 2000rpm, the hum of the tires of the asphalt, the wind from the open window and me enjoying a cup of hot coffee. Drove 50 clicks North and turned off onto a logging access road. Truck has a new clutch master/slave, it was nice to finally have a working clutch again.

My goals for the day were make a Dakota fire Pit and brew a cuppa, and build a debris shelter and some camp furniture in the woods. Sorry, i have no pics, the camera committed suicide off the kitchen counter...so try to go the descriptive account of what happened!

I parked the truck left my I.C.E. info on the dash and headed out. First i hiked to a stream and filled the water bottle, dropping a iodine tab into the bottle. Tucked the bottle into the Go-Bag and continued following a tiny animal trail. The forest was lush and wet, as it has been pouring here for the last few days. I went about 1/2 click up the mountain and paused to gather bone dry cedar pieces from a stump. Thats when I spotted something out of the corner of my eye, to my right and up the hill 5 feet. A black plastic bag, carefully wrapped, tucked next to a stump. A few leaves covered it. Hello? whats this? Broke out the TAC-EDC and made a slice in the plastic. 3 x 25lb bags of hi yield fertilizer and potting soil. ****! I'm in a grow op area. I covered up the bag again, looked around and spotted ABS flexible piping coming from the creek, and another fertilizer/soil stash. I promptly turned and left. BC has a huge dope growing ring, to the tune of billions of dollars. Outdoor grows are the norm here, and if you get discovered in one by the growers, you aint leaving. We have had lots of murders here, all dope related. I got the hell out of there and beelined for the trunk line. Where there is one grow there is almost always two or three more nearby.

Got back onto the logging road and headed for the truck. Dumped the gear into the back and drove up the road a ways.

Stopped and parked at another spot, and headed out again. Found a nice little spot to chill. Broke out the Idaho Knife Works "Hunters Companion" and made a pile of kindling for the Dakota pit. Used the GB axe to scrape a massive handfull of cedar bark, really fine fuzz. balled it up in my palms, and made a depression in the center for the PJCB to sit. Made a sharp stick and pounded it into the wet and cedar root infested earth to break up the soil. Scooped out the loose soil with my hands until it was about 10" deep. Pounded out another hole and scooped it out too. Bore a horizontal hole and scooped that clear. Lined the bottom of one pit with a pile of fine cedar bark, then some small kindling, then my big nest of cedar bark fuzz and PJCB. Layered dry cedar pieces over that and then split a twig with the Hunters Companion knife. Inside the split i put a bit of PJCB and lit it with my firesteel. Touched it to the cedar fuzz ball and it lit up instantly.

One thing about making a Dakota pit here on the WET Coast......the moisture in the air keeps the smoke low to the ground, it doesn't disperse.....much to my dismay....despite the roaring hot dakota pit, there was a ton of smoke drifting around. I cut a Y stick with my Scrapyard5 and hung my billy over the pit. In a few minutes the water was hot enough for coffee, i removed the billy and dropped in a handful of coffee grounds and let it steep. Put out the dakota pit with water until cold and then hand sifted it, then filled it back in with the soil i had scooped out. Covered the ground with leaves and pine needles, you couldn't even tell i was there.

Had my coffee and a food bar, then packed up and headed back to the trail. Got intot he truck and headed back down the trunk line to the highway. Back into the cesspool again.

just realized i never got around to making that debris shelter.....

oh and about the "sketchy people" I mentioned in the title. When i parked my truck the second time and headed out, I saw a dual sport bike and rider ripping up the logging trunk line. When he go to my truck he stopped, shut off his bike and looked around the area, before getting close to the truck. He looked inside the truck thru the windows, looked at the license plate and then starting looking around the area. He pulled out a cell phone and was talking for a bit on it, all the while looking around the area i was in. He then waited for a bit by my truck before finally taking off up the trunk line. Kinda weird........
the second sketchy person was a guy in a Jeep, he drove up the road and stopped too, looking around the area, lookingin my truck, then driving off up the road. On my way out i stopped for a pee break and my truck was behind a pile of gravel. I saw both the Jeep and offroad motorbiker driving out one after the other, they headed North to towards Squamish BC......

Lordy that's scary, that's why I keep my pistol when in the woods. But glad you still got to have some fun! It's good to get out of the asphalt world as often as possible. Did you call the authorities re: the pot?

sounds like a rockin good time. those outdoor grow ops are the reason we should be able to ccw pistols up here :D

hope that gobags workin out for ya.

cheers

well, once I'm working again and there is some money to spend, I'm going to finally send in the firearms license application, got my eyes on a nice shotgun or a 30-06 bolt action. Too many bears and cougars in our woods here......the grow op guys are secondary to that

Hey Bushman, I can relate to your story. Edmonton can be a like that times also. I've also went out in the bush for little jaunts and wanting to do one-nighters,but bailed out because of the other human factor ,or even fear for my safety. I've even been shot at once, but that's another whole story. I've never been afraid of bears, wolves, etc. (ran into them too!) , but dangerous people are another matter.

Gee, a guy just wants to get outa Dodge for a while, and you can't go far enough to escape the scourge of civilization. I commend you for your effort though, and if your anything like me, you will pack up again and try another place. Why ? Because there's guys like us who just get sick and tired of city, and want to re-connect with nature and simple things. Thanks for sharing your story.

Under covers looking for grow ops? Looking inside, looking at license plates, calliing the in or calling back up ...

^ i dont think so....I know one the police in this forest district and they dont have pimped out off road jeeps or dual sports with cargo racks.......I think maybe they were casing the truck but noticed the paper under the window that I left, stating "workers in immediate area, surveying" dated today......

Yeah Fred that's what I thought. Maybe some cops running the plates.

I thought weed was legal in Vansterdam?? What's with the covert garden??

Very good Idea, I think you should little to no problems getting a license for not only hunting, but protection from predators. I know with me, Im kinda not with at as I carry my service rifle, because I'm allowed of course, but honestly, when you see someone in the bush here with out a gun, they are the ones that are looked at like there nuts.

the smoking and possession of marijuana is legal as long as its for personal consumption and its under 1gram (dime bag).

however, selling weed is illegal. :D

great loophole system aint it?

i'm saving for remington 870 and a lever action 30-06.

good luck on that application.

I deal with this sort of thing all the time here on the east coast. Some of the most beautiful brooks here have plantations all along them.Through trial and error I know where to avoid now when I hike the low counter around here. It's truly sad.

Stands to reason that the the best survival strategy is just to leave well alone. They say the best defense is to show up somewhere else. Besides, it's at least as rude to meddle with someone's guerrilla grow as it is to rock up at The Clampits and poke in their moonshine or a bunch of Irish pikeys brewing up the poitín, especially at this time of year where I guess you can't be far from harvest time in Vancouver. I'm sure they're trying to avoid you as much as you're trying to avoid them. Big place though.

Is this prac-tac or politics?

I can see here it would be a real drag to live there, your population in Vancouver is about the same as our State of North Dakota. No way could I handle that. I just don't like people all that much.
