I dont know how I missed it but in rereading last month's Blade magazine I saw a small notice about a limited edition knife in remembrance of NY Transit Police Officer John D'Allara who perished in the WTC attacks.
John D'Allara was my friend. We went to school together and it was John who got me into lifting when we were at Columbus H.S., Bronx,NY. We became good friends and lifted together for quite a while. As often happens in life, he went one way(police dept. and bodybuilding) and I went another(US Army and powerlifting). We stayed in touch for years, mostly through friends, or run into each other at the old Mid-City gym on 49th St in NY. As a printing foreman at the NY Daily News I saw the lists of the dead early and though I was dumbstruck when I saw John's name there, it did not surprise me. He was always in the thick of it, helping people. Even back in school he'd stick up for guys getting picked on, it was just his nature. Just a damn good guy.
Are these knives still available and if so, can you tell me what they cost? If possible I'd like to get one as a remembrance. I just saw the notice about it last night and would need maybe a week to throw some cash together, but I would definitely like to get one if possible. I'll be at the ECCKS in a few weeks so if Spyderco will be there as usual, maybe I could get one then? I'd appreciate any info anyone has. Was also wondering how Spyderco picked John out of all the people who died there-was someone at Spyderco friends with him?
Thanks for listening.
BTW, I got the tattoo below in honor of NY Transit Police Officer John D'Allara and NY Police Officer Moira Smith(she was the only female NYPD to die there).
