Does the D'Allara have steel liners?
Not sure if I should go for the Caly3 or the D'Allara

Thanks

Yes it does.

Both knives offer a similar amount of blade. The D'allara gives you more reach and is better for rougher, heavier duty. The Caly 3 places the blade very close to your hand, giving you a precise cutting tool.

If you're doing a lot of heavier cutting the D'allara would be more ideal, but for general EDC I think the Caly 3 is a difficult knife to beat. Small, light, keeps the pockets accessible when clipped and offers unprecedented control over the cutting edge. It's one of the best knives I've ever used. The D'allara is a great knife, but there's no way I'd carry around the extra bulk if I didn't expect to need it.

The D'Allara definitely fills up the hand more. The Ball-Lock takes a little getting used to for some but I personally like it.

I don't carry a Caly, but I do carry a Native, and a D'allara.

The D'allara is quite bulky in the pocket, that being both width, and thickness. It is a bit of a pain getting other things passed it, but I have to carry it in the middle of my pocket to make room for my beeper. I found the D'allara to be the easiest spydie I have to open. It's like having a Native with a power steering pump attached. It slides open as smooth as a hot knife cutting butter. At first, closing is a bit more difficult, but then it becomes almost equally as easy as opening, and can be done with one move as opposed to two or three with a lockback. I have to use my thumbtip and thumbnail to depress the ball, and then with a light flip, swing the blade shut. It should be noted that this becomes somewhat more difficult if you are wearing gloves. In which case, you will have to pinch the ball with your thumb and index finger, and that may be a bit tricky. I also had trouble for a few days after I bit my thumbnail(I usually trim). I had to use the pinch trick, and decided to edc another knife until I grew a little bit of nail back. Although this sounds troublesome, closing the D'allara with one hand and one movement becomes habitual, and you may find that going back to a lockback will seem less desireable IMO.

Wow!
Great pics :D
Since the D'Allara is discontinued I think that I will grab one of these first

The D'allara's a large knife (It's especially thick). I think the Caly 3 would make a better pocket carry knife, but if you really like the D'allara, & it's being discontinued, then you're probably better off getting it first. They'll probably not get any cheaper to buy, if it's a popular Spyderco. Look at the Manix & Yojimbos. I was lucky to get a mini-Manix & Yojimbo on reasonable trades (Should have them by the end of the week).

It is my geuss that the exposed ball lock is being phased out by Spyderco. I saw a mention by Sal Glesser that he is considering a knife with a caged ball lock. It is a housing that is easier to grip than the naked ball. I personally am glad I got a D'allara for the unique value of the ball lock.

The D'allara reminds me of the full size Grip 550
So, is it any thicker then the Grip ?
Also, how does it compare to the mini Manix for edc

Wow. I'd never realized how similar the blade shape of the D'Allara is to the Salt 1. I love my Salt 1, and think the blade shape is one of the best out there. I was also impressed with the change made to the Delica 4, which changed the blade away from the needle point to be somewhat more similar to the Salt 1 (ended up giving away my Delica 3 and replacing it with a Delica 4, which I love). Although even with the changes, the Delica 4 is not nearly as similar as the D'Allara appears to be.

I think I need to get me one of these D'Allara's. ;-)
