Does anyone know if i can get one anywhere at a good price? And if so would it even be usable or just a wall piece?

Yes, you can get Damascus Hawk heads.

Yes, they are (can be ...) functional provided they have been designed as user tools.

Many I see available for sale truly appear to be wall hangers.

Local forge to me produces Damascus Hawks. Last time I was there we were throwing them at wood rounds. Many novice throwers out this day (some 1st timers even) and I witnessed no damage to the heads after MANY throws. This included many practice rounds followed by competitive elimination rounds.

So long as steel is good, forging is good, heat-treat & temper are good AND the base design is sound (designed and built as a user) the finished product should be very usable and will most likely be something to pass down to your children.

Frankly,i'm often puzzled by that turn of phrase-"GOOD price"....

It takes an N amount of hours/knowledge/effort to forge an axe, multiplied by an X amount of energy/materials/et c.,...So how can the price be "good", or "bad",when these factors are pretty much real, physical, not lending themselves very easily to this qualitive definition?

Well, there are a couple of ways...One is the complete "Wallmartisation" of the concept,in which case look around among products from India,Pakistan,China,et c.(i think that that second part of your question will be then answered for you automatically).

The more gray, intermediate way would be to look to the smiths that are responsible and reputable, but just happen to work in a different economies in the world(as an example,a very good smith,Greg Verizhnikov,in Ukraine,http://www.bladesmithsforum.com/index.php?showtopic=32340).

That is not fair at all to the smiths here,in this country, but such is life...Hate to get all moralistic here, but, afterall, the etymology of the initial question was "good vs bad"(if i understood it correctly,of course:)

So,if you have a job yourself,and/or produce anything to make ends meet, ask yourself what is the smith's time+skill is worth?
Would you work for a "good" price yourself?
How would that affect the quality of one's product, for one possible issue?...

With all due respect, but really, just interested(i no longer forge for hire myself, but still keep an eye on the market).
