I see nice looking Damascus bars on e-Bay that are "affordable at or under $30. . . .but they are from, Pakistan.

I see Damascus bars, and profiled blanks branded "Alabama" Damascus for a lot more.

I am n ot looking for the heapest item. I am looking for quality materials for a knife.

MY uninformed thought is that my best option is the Alabama Damascus, but I really have no idea.

Information andadvice is welcome.

Alabama Damascus is a respected, well known "mass production" damascus making company here in the US. I know plenty of makers that use Alaabama Damascus. They stand behind the product and use known steels with good knife making properties. the Ebay special Pakistan made damascus...not so much.

Other options to consider:

Chad Nichols
Vegas Forge
Mike Norris
Baker Forge.

Many are available on the various knife supply sites, like USAKnifemaker, Jantz and AKS.

HHH Knives does very nice billets, too!

I haven't messed with any damascus, it's just not for me. However, I'll bet you a beer, you get what you pay for.

The Pakistan Damascus is "ok" to play with, learning to grind & etch (while not expecting the best etch). Over the years I've acquired a few Pakistan Damascus blades - a good percentage of them suffered from delams, and of course you never know for sure what the alloys used are. As I said, just for practice. Alabama has a well desired good reputation for good Damascus - about the best value around price wise.

Thank you everyone. The advice given here, both pro and con, is pretty much what I had surmised.

Thanks all.
