So I have been making knives for several years now but only recently started selling them. My shop is very small and simple and very basic. I have been seeing an increasing number of custom hand made damascus knives go on the market for very cheap. So I am wondering where are these knife makers getting their blades? If they are making the layered steel blanks themselves how are they doing it for so cheap? And also in my opinion if you are buying a damascus knife blank and putting a handle on it, you should not call it a hand made knife. It should be called a knife with a hand made handle. Big difference between a knife smith and a knife builder. But mostly just wondering about the dmaking of a damascus blade and being able to sell it for so cheap.

Bunch of imported damascus blades coming in lately, from India and Pakistan. They are not custom, or handmade knives.

Yup, Been getting a lot of spam emails trying to sell cheap Damascus blades. Mostly from Pakistan but I have also received emails from China and India. \

You are correct, putting a handle on a finished blade is not handmade. There are those who think it is but the majority of us makers do not. It is ok if you disclose this up front to your customers and in the advertising you do. JMHO

Lawk,

If you update your profile to let us know where you live you might get a shop invite to see how it's done, Damascus that is.

thanks. I did that (updating my profile). I do know a fellow that has been a smith for many years that is going to show me a few things, but i would love to be able to se a few different smiths do it to see some of the basic techniques. especially to achieve a particular pattern.

Looks like we need to get another hammer-in going here in the PNW. Might have to look into this in the near future

I'm inclined to agree with you and the others. But without a link to verify, it's possibly pointing fingers at someone who may be very efficient.

Damascus pre-ground blades are not customs or handmades. Unground damascus qualifies, though.

Are you talking eBay?
