Damascus blade worth more?

I was told that if a knife collector is serious about collecting blades that are worth much more in future, they should collect more damascus blades.

Is that true?

Is it also true that a damascus Custom-made knife is worth more than its cousin which comes in other metallic forms?

The cost of damascus blade material is certainly much higher than other options, but most of the value of a knife has more to do with its execution (and the reputation of the maker) than it does the materials. On average, damascus probably raises the selling price of a blade by $100.

I agree with Don, Damascus costs more, but doe not neccessarily mean it will valuate better than a knife that has a non-damascus blade. Style, scarcity, execution and even who the maker is has a lot to do with it. I have seen some godawful knives, but because of the maker, they went up in value, for that reason alone.

Collecting in hopes that a knife will increase in value is a craps shoot unless you really know knives. A good person to ask about collecting is Les Robertson. He is the man who knows.

Dave Ellis here, interesting question. Really quite subjective, in general I would agree that the maker involved and execution of the piece are foremost except what about Bill moran knives,I value a Carbon Steel Moran hunter at approximately $4,000,the same hunter in Damascus by Moran i would probably value around $13,000! Quite a difference because of the maker. I also feel the since most of the damascus being used by stock removal makers is quite similar (being purchased from many of the same damascus
makers)it is similar to buying barstock except of course for the patterning.Hope I did not confuse the issue.

Thanks for the illuminating answers, guys.

Now I know a little more about damascus blades.

Now, what about those damascus blades which are forged by the custom makers who truly know the art of creating beautiful patterns?

I am sure these must be worth very much more, and they are certainly more fascinating.

Once again we are talking artistry and not collectability. The big guys Devin, Daryl, etc sell their steel X$/inch. Damascus is a part of the whole, it's not all of what makes a knife have value. I have seen many knives that are more collectable, that valuate faster with just plain steel. So damascus is just another element. I will say Damascus is for the most part pleasing to the eye and would not discourage you from collecting Damascus blades, just want you to collect them knowing that the Damasucs itself is not going to be the biggest factor in determining if the knife will increase in value.

Good luck and happy collecting.
