The damascus used is Devin's high contrast 1095/nickel I was told. This should take and hold an edge well as long as the nickel is not present on the cutting edge and with Devin's and Reeve's reputations I would have to believe it is not just eye candy. As far as how the bluing will hold up I would have to leave that someone with first hand experience but am sure that if problems did arise that Chris would restore the finish for a nominal charge similar to what he offers for his fixed blades. Sorry couldn't be more helpful.

I can't respond specific to the blue Devin Thomas, but I've used a lot of damascus (pattern welded) blades. In general, they lose that hair shaving edge quicker but still cut really well for certain applications. Almost like having a somewhat serrated blade versus a razor type. It's a different kind of cut. Depends what you like.
