New here and looking for some advice in picking out a Fixed Blade Damascus steel knife as a gift for a good friend to celebrate 54 years as a member in our "Crew". I am looking for a 4"-5" blade plus a quality handle and sheath. Must be in the $200-$400 range. Any serious help in this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.

Any other requirements or desired features other than fixed blade and damascus?

In that range you are most likely limited to Chinese or possibly Italian knives. You could probably go with Kershaw's Alabama Damascus but it's not as pretty & I don't think they have any offerings in a fixed blade. So that's redundant. Plus I think they look like crap, but that's just MY opinion.
I would suggest checking out Kizer or Civivi damascus fixed blades. They use 9CR & are pretty good quality(think 440C) & attractive. Anything from Chad Nicols or Devon Thomas is going to cost at least twice your budget, but that's what you get for quality & performance.

Go to page 505 under fixed blades and look at Taz's table. He has some beautiful Damascus knives at the 400. price point. Prices are on his tables. Check out the makers on our site, you will be amazed at what they can do at that 400.00 price point. It will be custom!

I did not catch the upper limit on the gift budget . . . .

At the tip-top on a semi-production knife would be a fixed blade from William Henry.

I would stay away from anything on e-Bay from Pakistan.

You generally get what you pay for. A high quality Damascus blade by a reputable custom maker (look no further than this forum) would be a good place to start. A lot of the so-called Damascus blades on the internet aren't worth the money.

If Damascus isn't absolutely necessary.

You could get an amazing custom with, IMHO, a better performing steel, superior grind, world class heat treatment, solid sheath and a gorgeous handle for that money. David Mary David Mary , navman navman , BogdanS BogdanS and many, many more.

If it came down to those attributes vs. damascus in your range. I'd consider that route. It may not hit in the gut as hard for the first 30 seconds but he'll be appreciating it for decades.

knifecenter has the spyderco bill moran dama for just under $400 right now... in case you didn't want customs
