Hi all, I'm new to this forum. I picked up a used Case pocket knife today. I don't know alot about them and I bought it because it looked cool. The blade is stamped case then XX, below that is USA with a dot in front of it, and below that is 51405L D It has a damascus blade about 3 inches long and stag handles
From what I can figure out, it was probably made in 1989, is this correct? What is the model name? What do the number mean? I realize you all can see the knife, but I gave $100 for the knife, did I get my head tore off on the price?

Thanks

That is a going price for the knife as long as there is not much wear and the knife is near mint.

The model number is 51405L D (The number on the tang is the model number) and it was in fact made in '89 when the late James Parker owned case. The damascus for the knife came from the Fain/Edwards factory in Alabama.

I am sure someone can correct me if I am incorrect but the model number is a 5140 (sure of that) L (might stand for a Long Pull nail nick) and D stands for damascus (sure of that).

BTW welcome to Blade Forums. Glad to have you with us!

I also carry a Damascus Case Stag folder with locking blade.
I belive it is a Commerative or Anniversary model.
The bolsters have a long tailed C with #282 and xx.
Tang=Case xx, underneath -one dot USA
Model numbers R0G61405l D.

I hope the scales are real Stag. Never can remember the dating system.

I believe that the L and the end of the pattern number is for "Lock"

Yup, thanks for jogging my memory. That "L" does mean lock on model numbers I am familiar with.

What do you fellows think about my above mentioned Case damascus locking knife?
How can I tell if it has true Stag scales?
It hasn't been used at all, but lately it's become my EDC.
It's nice to show, feels good, but maybe too nice for an EDC???
I realize it's up to the owner, just wondering your thoughts.

As per the case website, the first number in the model number indicates the handle material.
It's in the FAQ on their site ... I wish they listed all the numbers, but as an exsample all it says is that if it starts with 6 it's bone.
In a different thread, lastconfederate says that if the number starts with a 5, it's real stag.
I have a stag handled copperlock, and the first # in the model number is a 5.
So your case does have real stag handles.
As far as carrying it, I'd say that if you want to sell it someday, make it a safe queen, otherwise you'll enjoy carrying and using it more then keeping it in a drawer.
Of course, YMMV - my own cutting chores are very light weight.

The scales aren't stag, I'm afraid. The 6 means they're bone, and furthermore, the ROG means they're "Rogers bone"- a particular style of jigging or somesuch. I have several damascus Case knives with Rogers bone myself. Ain't nuthin' wrong with it, as long as it ain't cracked, as several of mine have.
