Damascus choices .... or lack thereof.

After stuffing my belly on Thanksgiving, I decided to relax by refining the edge bevel on one of my newer knives (not a CRK, but bear with me). It has (IMO) a beautiful Chad Nichols African Savanna pattern. Anyway, after I was finished admiring my work on the blade edge, I began perusing my daily list of sites to check for knives I can't possibly live without. At one site, there were a bunch of new addition large Sebbies with Damascus blades ..... Raindrop, one after the other, Raindrop, Raindrop, and more Raindrop. It got to the point where I was no longer looking at which one had the better scale embellishments, but which had the better Raindrop pattern! With the elimination of Spirograph, choices for current CRK Damascus models are very limited. While Raindrop is nice .... too much of a good thing isn't. While I haven't heard that Ladder is being dropped, haven't seen that many new ones hitting the market. While I would never try to tell a cook ..... how to cook, I would love to see more variety in new CRKs being produced .... there is a lot of beautiful Damascus out there. I would really love to see some of it on a Mnandi or Sebenza. It would certainly help me get to the poor house that much quicker!

I think I read somewhere that crk was bringing a new Damascus design to market soon. Not sure if this is true, just recall reading that.

I agree. I'm sad that CRK can't do better than two patterns. The vines & roses is beautiful, and they've used it before.

As far as I recall my local pusher said that he talked to Chris and Chris said he would be introducing more options for damascus patterns in the future.

Raindrop and ladder damascus is beautiful but options are good.

I also agree with d.r.h. You can look at some popular Damascus sites and see that they offer many different patterns, why not mix it up to make it more interesting.

Don't mean to hijack your thread, and I know this could be debated endlessly, but in general how does the damascus steel used in CRK's compare to his S30V or S35VN in terms of performance/edge holding?

I personaly don't like a lot of the new damascus patterns, they often look scrappy and just messy to me. I would rather see a few of the old classics done well and cleanly executed than using all sorts just for the sake of it. :)

I think you are right.
While i try to stay away from the damascus thing, although at this time I'm very tempted,
i try to convince myself that most damascus makes the knife look too turbulent.
Sometimes it works.
