Damascus Color

I bought a Damascus blade, cleaned up the shape and put an edge on it. Then I soaked it in etching solution to get the figuring back from the areas that I sanded, filed, etc.. Now, all the coloring is gone. Does anyone have a suggestion about how to get it back? One pal suggested bluing the blade and sanding it down with 600 grit sandpaper.
