I'm ready (I think) to start attempting to make some damascus. I have a bunch of 1/16" O1 laying around, what would go well with that? I have access to some banding material which I believe are 1095. Would that work well?

So far I've only played with forge welding the O1 to itself. My lesson learned is.... hot flux burns.

Thanks for any input.

Greeting's Well let Me Think !! if i was using the 1/16th o1 you speak of i would Probably use 15N20 for Contrast it well Heat Treat Very well!! I Would Recoment trying a Piece of Cable Before You Try to Forge a " Proper Billet" Good Luck !! Yes the Flux / Slag Burn like Hell But that is The Price for the "Dream Steel":D ;)

Actually, the bright line will be the O1. You would want 01 and 1095 or 84. Check out Don F. site he has many combos listed.

Ryan: 15N20 or L-6 would go nice with O-1. I have seen 1018 in a billet too. But this does reduce the carbon.

O1 would work well with L6. Based on a discussion I had on another forum recently with ABS MS Kevin Cashen, I know understand that both those are rather deep-hardening steels. 15N20 is more shallow hardening and would work well with 1084.
