I’m relatively new to blade smithing, but I finally graduated to Damascus. My first billet and subsequent blade turned out fairly well. I used 1095 and 15N20, but I didn’t get enough contrast to suit me. Perhaps I’m missing something, I’m not sure. I learned all I know thru trial and error. To remedy this I’m switching to 1084. I have nickel 201 annealed sheets that I’m planning on using in between each layer of 1084 and 15N20, will this help with contrast or be more trouble than it’s worth?
Also, any thoughts on the perfect grind for a Damascus? Maybe 600 grit followed by 1500 grit for the top of the minuscule ridges?
Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.
