Well, my cousin is rather fond of the Alaskan Knives Cub Bear caper he has, but is also a big fan of damascus. This is the result. Blade is 400 layer ladder pattern of 0-1 and 15n20, handle cocobollo, full taper tang. This is the first damascus that I've tried mirror polishing. Looks good in person, but I can't get the pattern to show in a picture for the life of me.

I've had requests to make those too. Your damascus looks great. When you say mirror polish, waht do you mean. I have little to no experience with Damascus but do you mean you etch then buff / polish the surface rather than sand it off to highlight ? Jason.

Looks sweet Clint, I like the wood. Might have to make me one of those too. What I did with those two tanto's I made was gave them a really deep etch and then repolished them using 1 layer of 1500 grit on a micarta block. If you don't reposition the block on the wood, the sandpaper grit gets finer and finer and in no time you mirror finished the high points of the damascus. It looks pretty good and the pattern really stands out. I'll have to take a picture some day (yeah right!).

Jason, by mirror polish I mean that I used a buffer with a cotton wheel and compound to achieve a mirror shiny finish, after etching. Sounds like a bad plan to bring out a pattern, and is definately isn't a contrasting as the sanded finish I normally do. Sill looks good, but you have to study it closer to see the pattern. Just trying different things for fun.

Thanks for the compliments. Hugh, quit talking about pictures. I know that you just bought that fancy digital camera to say you had one, not to use it. Just like the mill! The hand sanding with a block and 1500 grit is what I normally do.
