I'm not an expert on Damascus or Damasteel. So while I love them aesthetically I'm curious as to how they hold up performance wise to other steels.

Appreciate the feedback,

Pattern welded steels are as varied as regular steels. Quality and performance depends on how its made, who made it and with what materials. That being said I have been carrying a Bill Ogden folder with a Devin Thomas damascus blade for a while now. I find that it stays sharp and does what I want it to do with no problems.

Yes, it is for looks. As some who forges damascus, I will tell you that using best methods, the steel will basically be the sum of its component materials.

It's for looks, but it needn't lack in the performance department.

I've had really good Damascus, and I've had really bad. If done with quality materials and workmanship it's worth it to me.

Gonna do that Southern Grind Spider Monkey in Damasteel one of these days.

Also Damascus can be made a with Carbon or Stainless Steels .. Devin Thomas does make some top Quality Damascus, In Carbon & Stainless, I use his Stainless Damascus for a few of my Culinary Knives...

Damasteel is roughly around 440C in terms of performance. It's made with powder steels similar to 154cm and 13c26, but performs somewhere in the middle. It's by no means a bad steel, but you aren't buying it for ground breaking performance. It sure is pretty compared to plain steel though...
