Hey everyone. I got a damascus knifen that i love but noticed a layer of steel peeling iup. It was thin enough that i could peel it off with my finger. There was some rust under where it peeled. It feelslike the separation goes further along the blade (i can catch my finger nail on the layer) isthis something to worry about? I think the layer is pretty thin. I dont know much About damascusIMG_3588.jpeg

Maybe a problem, might just be cosmetic. I’d contact the maker and ask them. I’d oil or wax the blade to prevent any corrosion damage. What I see in the pic wouldn’t really bother me if the blade is a user. If it was a very expensive collector piece, I might hold it to a higher standard.

Moisture will keep creeping in over time and will rust. In the long term - could be many, many years - I believe it will do damage, just like rock fissures erode.

I'd heat the blade up a little (not red hot!) to drive out any moisture that might be in there, and then do like Bill suggests above. Mechanical stress will of course work to make the delamination larger.
