I'm asking for a friend who wants to buy her husband a nice Damascus fixed blade knife. I think price point might be around $100 maybe a bit more. Its OK if it is a kit. I'm not really into damascus and don't know what is out there, thanks for your help.

honestly for $100 the best option might be artisan cutlery or civivi... both of them do fairly good quality 'budget' damascus
also a great option are the kershaw models which use alabama damascus (leek, dividend and knockout if memory serves)

it's far too easy to get junk damascus in that price range

PS... ugg, apologies I missed the 'fixed' part of this equation...

it's sad, but I wish these above companies did a fixed damascus, but they don't...

don't think there are any good fixed options in that pricerange

Civivi was the first thing I searched. Their particular "Damascus" is based on 9Cr18Mov. At least with their regular 9Cr18Mov, performance is exceptional. They seem to have the best heat treatment for that steel in the current market. I was a little surprised not to see a fixed blade in their Damascus but then again, I think they've only recently started doing fixed blades.

Looking at the BladeHQ results I linked above, I'm not familiar with some of these brands. I've seen some tests of really cheap "Damascus" that performed on par with price. Like with regular steel, performance depends on the actual composition, heat treatment, blade geometry, etc. An additional challenge here is not knowing what steel or steels are used in different versions of "Damascus". Hopefully, somebody with experience can thin the results for us.

so, kershaw uses alabama damascus & they sell full-tang blades directly on their site
making the handle yourself should be fun : )

http://www.alabamadamascussteel.com/full-tang/

(they don't sell fully complete knives, so I hope that is ok... I was looking for the materials/steel/supply dealer list and I wasn't able to find it... please let me know if I need to remove the link)
