I recently received this Civivi Mckenna Damascus. Is the dot/scratch in the picture normal? Thanks

Have you tried to clean it off ?

Photo is out of focus , so hard to tell much .

The mark is permanent. I cropped the photo to make the mark easier to see as it's right in the center. I don't know anything about Damascus so I don't know if random marks and flaws are common or not.

Might be a piece of forge scale that was folded into the metal. To the best of my knowledge, so long as the welds around it are solid it doesn't pose a great danger to the blade. However, my knowledge is all gained second and third hand so take it all with a pinch of salt. I'm no expert of forging.

In cheap junky Damascus , e.g. from Pakistan , flaws are common . Not just surface blemishes , but structural cracks and delamination .

Civivi is reportedly usually fairly good , so I'd say yours is not normal for the brand .

I would return it in any case , if it bothers you . The main reason for Damascus is for the appearance / visual appeal .

Civivi's damascus is pretty stainless, so it's unlikely to be excessive etching or something like that. Could be a contaminant in/on the blade though. How'd you try to remove it? If you're not going to return it, I'd hit it with chrome polish or Flitz.

My McKenna is flawless. I would return/exchange it. Damascus is all about the look. If its got a big visible flaw like that, what's the point? I guess in that its a Damascus based on 9Cr, perhaps the edge retention is better than the standard D2? Maybe because its a stainless option? A clue I haven't. I bought it because its nifty looking. It came sharp as hell.

I don't usually have a problem with a knife having a "minor" flaw, but I assume that people who buy Damascus blades do so because they like the looks of them. If I purchased a knife, in part based on it's looks, that flaw would bother me, and I would send it back.

This is all assuming that it's a permanent flaw in the steel and cannot be easily removed.

Thanks for all the replies. The dealer agreed to send a new one out immediately and gave me a return label to send it back. Normally I'm not too picky on marks like this but I paid extra for the looks of the blade and it's my only Damascus.

While I am sure it wouldn't impact the usability I would send it back. Kod said it perfectly, damascus is all about the look.
