Damascus Folder Recommendation

Looking for a folder with an understated Damascus blade that would work as a "gents" knife. I don't like the heavily etched look. I prefer something more like Shun kitchen knives, some of the mcustas or the Kershaw Wild Turkey. I'd prefer a pocket clip, a handle not made of metal and not a frame lock.

A bit picky, I know, but at least I don't really have a budget or time frame for this one so even obsurd customs may be considered. Rewarding myself for landing a promotion at work. Any help finding something would be appreciated.

If I could build a perfect example it'd be a Kershaw Skyline with the Wild Turkey blade steel, nice wooden or emerald silver twill scales and blued hardware...

How about something like the Spyderco Stretch with VG-10 Damascus and blue (or black) Nishijin handles? About $260.

Brian Tighe also has some very nice selections in his custom line. For example, here is a pic of his Tighe Coon:

Best of luck finding what you want. Half the fun is in the hunt. ;)

Just a thought. But can't the acid etching be polished/sanded off? Usually the problem is the other way around though, where people have accidentally "worn" off the acid etch, and want to get it re-done.

You might get the skyline and take some polishing compound to it and see if that works for you.

Oh, and someone please correct me if totally off base here :).

Can anyone comment on whether or not this will work? Never owned a Damascus knife before.

I know the principle should work. I've just never owned a Damascus blade, so its hard to verify :).

Damascus is just a stainless steel and a carbon steel layered over each other many, many times. The carbon steel oxidizes, and the stainless doesn't. Acid etching gives a much darker oxidation than normal use (from what I understand), and I know I've seen at least one Damascus blade "ruined" by polishing it (making it look less obviously Damascus).

But I'd like to know for certain too, one way or another.

Good luck with whatever you do :).

Love Alan's stuff. Might have to see if I can commission one, but I think I'm going to test the polish theory on a skyline. If it works out I'll just build the one I described in the OP.
