hello.
a good friend of mine is turning 40 and he is into pocket knives (hope he's not on this forum...) I was trying to get a bunch of his friends to go in on getting him a nice collector knife.
i don't know much about knives myself but my hobby is woodworking. both my friend and i like the look of damascus steel, hence the idea of the damascus pocket knife.
I'm in the Toronto area and found a shop called Knife, downtown. They sell a brand called Mcusta. As i said, i don't know much about knives and have no idea if this is a good brand or not.
My friend likes the tactical type folders. I've been searching online and found a bunch of ones that i personally like. there looks to be a lot of imitation cheapie type knives out there and then there's the 'mortgage your house' boutique knives. I'm looking for something like the SOG Arcitech Damascus. (just not the $600 price tag) or the Boker Tirpit ($900!) I don't even know if these are good brands. i just like the way they look.
Depending on how many of his friends come in on the deal, i'm looking to spend between $200-400.
what are some other known good quality brand names? does anyone know where i could go locally (within the GTA) to take a look at different brands? does anyone have any suggestions within that price range?
thanks in advance

If you have access to Mcusta there locally, go take a look at them. They are good knives.

Mcusta has several good options. Also look at the Kershaw Shallot Damascus, Spyderco Delica 4 Titanium/Damascus, and Spyderco Stretch Damascus w/ blue glass fiber handle.

Mcusta makes high quality Damascus knives at reasonable price. The fit and finish on both Mcusta knives I have is excellent.

For that kind of money, and less, you can get some very nice damascus bladed knives: The Endura, Delica, Stretch (black or blue nishijin), all by Spyderco. Kershaw makes the Shallot and Leek, and you know the Mcusta.
I can't begin to tell you how beautiful the nishijin glass fiber is that Spyderco uses. I like the blue, but the black is nice, too.

Well Mcusta already has a pretty strong showing so them for sure. (They also did the Browning Ice, I believe. Dunno if that came in plain VG-10 steel, or also in Damascus) I'd throw my hat in for Sante Fe Knifeworks. They have a decent selection of damascus knives with fairly similar lines to Mcusta's. LionSteel also has their Ladder Pattern Damascus on the SR-1(A) probably on a few of their others as well.

Plain VG-10 only. And as others have said, Mcusta is an excellent brand. (By the way, Mcusta is actually an abbreviation. It's derived from "Machined custom". :) )
