I'd like to try this soon also, I think the low alloy steels would be best, something like 1075 and L6 should make a nice contrast. Any of the blade quality 10xx series and something like L6 or 15N20 because of the nickle content should work equally as well.
Those who really know may have a better combination for beginners.-Guy Thomas

For a first try use 1095 or 1084 and mild steel. Has good contrast, welds easily(if you do your part), and makes a pretty good knife with the right heat-treat.

If you get brave throw in a little L6 for a different contrast instead of the mild steel.

Lots of luck. And remember, if you get bitten by the "heat-n-beat" bug you may never get rid of it.

It's a fine line between "a hobby" and "mental illness".

Try 1084 and 15N20, they weld up real nice and you get a good contrast with the 15N20 (1075 with 2% nickel) with a proper heat treat this combo will make a very good knife. Jeff Carlise has the stuff, contact him at 1-800-378-1246 He also makes a nifty hydraulic press that works real well!!! Good luck Mike
