A friend of mine and I were looking at some steel penatrators from .50 cal rounds and was wondering if they could be beat into a damascus blade. Unfortunately I do not know the type of steel they are made of. They are about 2" long and about 3/8" in dia. and very tough. We fired them into a stone wall and there was no deformation at all.

I was there....I believe they are tungsten or something similar. They are from .50 API. Can they be beaten into something sharp?

API? You got to play with the incendiary stuff?  Or is it just AP?

I don't know whether you could make damascus with it or not. If its tungsten, then thats a big NOPE. But it if its steel you'll need an idea of what kind it is.

Check it with a magnet , steel will be magnetic not tungsten. They should be steel but I have no idea what kind.

I have no idea what type of steel they are made out of but I can tell you this, they are harder than a woodpeckers lips. I use a couple that I pulled as center punches and they work good for center punching steel. ;) Ron

They should be tungston steel. even the 45cal ap round. They just keep going and going and going.

I have heard they are tungston also, but wasn't sure. So the consensus is tungston is out for a blade steel?

Differentiate between tungsten and tungsten steel. A tool steel with considerable tungsten would be a pain to grind and polish.A tungsten tool steel should have a very noticable spark deep orange or red.

I just checked them with a magnet and they stick.....so can something be pounded out of them? We'll probably get a bagful.
