mathias maresch lives just across the border in southern germany. three months ago we visited him in his shop, in the centre of a small medieval town. i ordered a simple damascus hunter that i wasn't allowed to unwrap until yesterday, as it was a birthday present from my girlfriend.

blade length is 5 1/2", oal 11", random pattern damascus blade, damascus ferrule and cap (don't know the steels yet). the handle is fossil whale jawbone :) of natural dark brown colour. it's a take-down construction, no epoxy used. the sheath has a damascus clip. you carry the sheath very comfortably under the belt.

althoug the knife looks rather rustic, fit and finish are absolutely stunning, no bad angle, very nice flow with beatiful details. needless to say that i am very happy!

Hans,
Happy belated b-day,keep the g/f. :D
Very nice package, the clip is a nice touch on the sheath and I think the fossil whale bone complements the damascus pattern well.
Take-down construction makes it even more appealing to me.
Nice lines,nice hunter.

Can you have your girl-friend talk to my wife... maybe share some gift giving tips??
Good looking knife. It looks like it fits well in the hand and could do the job.

back from wales. great country, by the way!

thank you all for the kind comments!

doug, sure, i'll keep her! at least i try hard... my hobby is certainly not the main reason why we are still together :D

wynonsmith, it wouldn't help, believe me, quite the reverse!

just in case you are interested: mathias has a nice website, although the navigation is a little bit tricky. move the mouse over the vertical bars on the left, choose "galerie", then move the mouse over the bars on the right, then click on a picture. you get more pictures of the same knife when you move the mouse over the horizontal bars.

What a nice Birthday present. Love the damascus pattern.
Usually like at least a 1/2 guard but the damascus bolster works quite nice.

That is precisely the kind of knife I lust after. Simple, rustic, and cool as all get out. I envy you.

That i sjust a beautiful knife. Simple, clean and great lines. I dig random damascus.

Hans-

I agree with Roger 100%. This is just a beautiful knife. The lines are very smooth and flowing, and all of the elements work.

Wonderful job Mathias!

What a wonderful b-day present for Hans!

What an awesome knife! I like everything about it.

I have just had a knife from Mathias` passaround here and the performance of that one was great. Very nice balanced with accurate grinds and very good edge holding. His work always amazes me pleasantly! :D

Congratulations on a perfect knife, Hans!:thumbup:

Very nice!!!
Bayrische machen die besten messern.:D:D

Its been 20 years since I was last in Germany (lived in Gumatten Kirche bie Ampfing und Muhldorf sud Bayern) so my German is pretty poor.

What is his average price for the knives he makes?

Danke,
Stefan

thanks a lot for the kind comments, guys!

stefan, take care! i am not sure if mathias likes to be called a "lederhose", he lives in baden-württemberg! ok, maybe he feels honoured, don't know :D. about the price, i think it's best to contact mathias personally by e-mail. his english is at least as good as mine: info@mareschmesser.de

best regards,
hans
