Here are some pics of a weekend project on the new press. Starts as some end cuts in my scrap bin....6 layers of alternating 01, L6, 1080, and 1084. Folded in stacks of three after drawing and then later two. Towards the end I cut some grooves in the billets and peened it up a bit to random the pattern. 210 layers in all.

The finished knife has a 3/16" thick blade that is 4.5" long. The guard is NS and it has a sambar handle with ebony spacer and butt.

Great use of "scrap" Greg! You said "Towards the end I cut some grooves in the billets and peened it up a bit to random the pattern." Can you tell me about that, looks like you cut grooves lengthwise maybe. I've been thinking about making up some sort of random "ping" die set. Very nice knife!

Greg, Nice knife! I got a feeling your liking the new press. I got mine on order. 6 to 8 weeks and hopefully by then my shop addition will be done.

Nice Greg!!! You did that all this weekend? Wow...

Hows the watch...? :D

Thanks guys!

Brian...yes...started out at the crack of dawn on Sat. Had the billet/blade done, HT , guard fitted, handles up by late Sat even and then some final polishing and sanding on Sunday. The SAR watch is superb!!!!!!!

Raymond: you will love your press! Are you going to pick it up? I highly recommend a trip to Ron's...he is an unbelievable wealth of info.

Robert: I cut the grooves in at just about 45 deg angles but at the point that I cut them was not as late as you would with a ladder pattern, etc. Right before the final fold to get to 210 layers, I beat the heck out of the bar with a ball peen while at welding heat and that more than likely created a few of the eyes you see.

I used an angle grinder on the scale before each layer weld....much faster than a belt. The billet was welded with 20 mule team borax.

Greg, Its alittle far for me to venture out at 2100 miles one way. If it was half that I would attempt it. I could see me lost in the middle of no where scratching my head saying I sure got a nice press if I even get it home. I've got a new shop to put together plus 3 shows lined up thinking the last one may be the time the press shows up. I'm sure you right about Ron's knowledge, the timing just isn't right for me.

Pretty Slick blade Greg, very nice work, ya must love the press. :) Sure beats the heck out of beating the steel on an anvil to make your billet

:D :D

I think it does but I am not sure....I had buffalo chicken wings and beer the night before using it....so there was an "odor" in my shop....but not the press. Forge seemed to get hotter though ;)
