Here is another small hunter similar to the other one I posted. Its basically the same style with the blade being 4" and an overall length of 8.5". The blade is made of 15n20/1080 damascus. The handle is African Blackwood and the guard is stainless steel. I still have to go over the handle again and sand the last few scratches out and make a sheath for it. I'm going to give this one to a guy my dad works withs son who loves the outdoors but is confined to a wheel chair. He has a rig built so that he can shoot a rifle or crossbow right from his wheelchair and he's actually shot a couple of nice deer from what I've heard.

Hey Rob,

That's one lucky fella. He's going to be blown away. What a great deed for a great knife by a great guy.

I remember your other knife well. I really enjoyed it. Do the two handle woods, oak and African ironwood, really look as much alike in person as they do in the pics? There's no pin this time. Can you explain how you set the handle then? Are you making the pattern weld too?

Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to seeing more!

All the best, Phil

Phil,

The oak and the blackwood are both darker woods which I think contrast against the damascus better but if you look closer the oak burl will be browner with much more figure in the wood. After I finish removing all the scratches from the handle of this one I'm going to apply some tung oil in the hopes of darkening it even more to an almost jet black, also there is hardly any figure in the blackwood.

The handle construction is the same meaning that I drill/file a hole in the wood the same as before. I opted not to install a pin since the only pins I have on hand are 3/16 which I think might visually be too large for this sized handle, instead I filed groves in the tang itself so that once the epoxy dries it will be able to hold on better. Looking at the pictures though I think I might buy some 1/8" pin stock because the handle looks empty to me...what do you think? Also I do make my own damascus out of 15n20/1080. I have a homemade press which makes it much easier. Thanks everyone else for the comments.

Rob,

I believe the knife looks good with or without the pin. I'm not sure I'd do it simply for looks, but if it would make it significantly stronger, then yes, probably.

I liked the oak wood better, partly because it's local, but also because it seemed like it had more character. How did you get it to be so dark?

Cool you make your own pattern weld. It looks good. How did you do it? How many layers of what thicknesses> What manipulations did you do to it to get the pattern? Would you tell us more about your homemade press. Got any pics?

Hope this isn't too pesky. Thanks, Phil
