I'm professing my ignorance here guys: I recieved a blade that came heat treated and ground, drilled etc. Question is, it's dark brown in color quite rough. How do I finish it? I would think that sanding would remove all the patterns exposed by the etching. Any help would be appreciated.

Is this a kit type blade? If so you will probably wind up hand sanding to the desired finish and then re-etching. Ferrric chloride or hot vinegar.

Take a piece of wood 1" by 2". Cover it with the finest grit sanding paper you can get (min. 1000). Polish the blade carefully with it. It will shine up the layers that are standing out and will leave the "grooves" dark which will result in a design with a really good contrast. The steel quality of the damascus steel blades from India is not very good.
