Where is the best place to buy a damascus knife kit? I just bough a field knife at a gun show for my father-in-law but think I was sold a fake so I decided being a woodworker I would just make him one. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the Forum, MuleDalton, from one woodworker to another.

You can get damascus blades at just about any knife making supply shop. Here are a few for traditional blade blanks:
www.knifekits.com and www.popsknifesupplies.com (2 of my favorites for prices)
www.hawkinsknifemakingsupplies.com
www.jantzsupply.com
www.nothcoastknives.com
www.texasknife.com

There are more, of course. If you like Scandinavian grind knife blanks, EnZo makes a nice looking damascus, and they describe their steels used:

If you've never scaled a blade before, woodworker or not, there are a couple of things to watch out for. I've made a tutorial in a Word document that might help. You're welcome to it but I only email it because I don;t have a website. One of the biggest concerns is making sure that the pin and lanyard holes are precisely perpendicular to the scales so there is no slop around the pins and lanyard tube after everything is finished up. Most woodworkers will give this appropriate cogitation before beginning work on the scales but still, after 30-plus years of custom woodworking specializing in Stickley-style Arts-and-Crafts furniture, I had to act like I never learned anything and re-learn the hard way! ((( :D ))) Post your email if you're interested....
