I have about $350.00 to spend on a handmade damascus fixed blade hunter. Any suggestions on a good knife maker? I saw a nice one made by Chuck Hawkes. Does anybody know anything abou him?

You will not go wrong with Tim Zowada!! His workmanship is excellent and most importantly, his knives will hold an edge and are easy to sharpen. I have one I expect next week and it cost $350.

J,

Auctually his name is Chuck Hawes. I have three knives made by him. He is a realy good maker and a friendly guy. If you would like more info you can email me. I have is phone number address etc. I can also tell you what steels he usually uses and such. I have to agree that Tim Zowada would be a wise choice. I have a knife made by Mark Nevling with the blade ground from a meteorite billet forged by Tim. I can send you a picture if you would like.

Regards,

Tom Carey

I just bought a couples of knives and for the money you can't beat Chuck. I paid less for two knives from him then most others for one.

In fact there was a maker that used his damascus at same show, and his stuff looked close to Chucks but cost twice as much.

Oh I forgot to say that both knives together cost only $325

They were two skinners one a drop point and one a hump back.

I recommend you check out Stamascus Knife Works. They have a great selection in your price range. The photos on their web site look great. The maker is Ed VanHoy (he makes most of the knives), his wife Tanya does all of the engraving and inlay work. The stainless damascus is made by Mike Norris (he is in charge of their steel production. I have a folder on order and I can't wait to see it.

Zowada is a great maker, but not taking orders.

I would recomend John Fitch. He makes very nice damascus and runs it through the same cutting tests as his carbon. He recently won the OPEN cutting competition at the Fall ABS Hammer in....with a bowie.

I talked with him last night and hes doing some mosaic patterns as well.

Email me if you want his #, i dont have it hear at work.

How about Cleston Sinyard? Who knows about his work?

Thanks for posting the topic,
I'm looking for just about the same type and price range of knife. I posted last week asking about comparables to Herb Derr, whose work really impressed me at the NYCKS. The problem is a lot of these makers, (and I think they're great) just don't have a web site, I know Derr doesn't. It's a shame.

Joe L,
Thanks for that Stamascus link. Great stuff, I've never been there before. I could get in a lot of trouble there. Enjoy your new knife from them. I just e-mailed them that I'll see them next year.
