Thinking about ordering a mnandi with a damascus blade. I was reading that you need to wipe down the blade with a rust inhibitor each time it's handled, unless it is stainless. Are any of the CRK damascus steels stainless? How does damascus hold up compared to the S30V ?

If anyone has a lefty mnandi they want to part with...:o ;)

CRK does not use carbon Damascus anymore. That's not to say there aren't some used ones floating around. The dams us appears to be holding just as well for those using non damascus blades.

If the steel is made by Gary House or Bertie Rietveld it will be carbon steel. If it is made by the Thomas brothers (Devin or Rob) it will be stainless. Unless you buy an older model it can be either carbon or stainless from the Thomas brothers. The type of stainless that is used is a sweedish steel made by Uddeholm called AEB-L. AEB-L is an accronym for - An Excellent Blade Steel - Low carbon. This steel has a finer grain structure than S30V and if properly heat treated is just as good if not better than S30V in my opinion. I never get complaints on its performance.

Rob:
cool to see that you are visiting this forum. I love my Devin Thomas raindrop Mnandi. It is my EDC. I have had it for maybe 6 months. I really live in fear that it will be misplaced, but I don't want it to become a safe queen.

I have read that AEB-L was designed as a razor blade steel. (don't know if that is true or not) the other alloy in this knife, I understand is a fairly common stainless alloy.

The knife was shaving sharp when received. I am the first to admit, I am no expert at sharpening but I do OK. I have not yet been able to return it to it's out of the box sharpness, but I am happy with how it holds it's edge. still working on getting that hair popping edge back.
