I've come up with a design (inspired by a bunch of knives I've seen lately). I'm wondering if there's anybody out there who would like to help me bring it to light.

It's a design for a damascus neck knife, one-piece skeleton.

I'm also looking for any ideas on how I could improve this design.

I'm thinking about making a mock-up model out of wood first, as a test, before moving to the damascus.

Any takers?

BTW, my skill level is 0.1 ;)

The "eye" could be anything from a graphic treatment, to an etching, to a cutout (not preferred, though).

I had two thoughts of your design. The first thought was immediate. The second came after I looked a bit closer at it.

First thought: Your sick BTW!

Second thought: Hey I like that!

I love the design but don't you think it will be uncomfortable to hold if that tail has so sharp points ?

Hmm. I agree. The tail looks like it would hurt. maybe smooth out the back of the handle, so it has the fin look, but it is a smaller curve, and more gradual. Also, if you are serious bout this, let me know. I have some raindrop high carb damascus i will be getting soon, and I can make a mock up out of O-1 or something if you want.

rlinger, P.K.Hansen, and Taz = your comments and suggestions all make 100% sense.

I've redesigned the knife to have more handle, less blade. I also beefed up the "stops" (fins). Lastly, I smoothed out the back, lengthened the tail, and made the fins thicker and less pointy.

I plotted a few of these out and cut them out of high-compression cardboard - about 1/16" thick. I would definitely want this to be at least 1/8" if not 3/16" thick (at the spine).

It feels pretty good in my hand. The dorsal/pectoral fins as set in their position make a comfortable grip and the tail fits right into the gap between my 4th & 5th fingers.

Tell me what you think.

btw, Taz = I'm very serious about trying this out. Your suggestion is a good one - I'd be willing to have a go at it in O1 first to create a mock-up, then hammer one out in a high-carbon damascus.

The new one makes more sense - let us see some pics when it's finished. That's going to be one sweet knife :)

Ok. I'll see what steel i have around here, and i gotta order some from crucible anyway. gotta get some more S30V :)

As for the eye, what i can do it do a full harden, and them mask off the eye, and they etch with ferric chloride. it will give the blade that matte look, with the eye being shiny. For the damascus, ill do the same thing, so the eye is shiny and the damascus is etched. should look neat!

I was testing a knife to see of i could get the edge to chip. I could and when I looked at the blade the chip out and point looked like a sharks head with a wide open maw. Didn't seem practical like that though.

Sure like your idea. I think I'll have it.;)

It's all yours Taz.

Thanks for the emails.

You have email Pendentive! :D The steel is old saw blade, ie L6, so there are pits in the steel. I can try to get them out, but for now, you can get an idea of what it looks like. Still thinking of how to do the eye on it...
