Damascus question for makers...

I have two damascus knives with the same problem. When the blades are sharpened, the edge literally flakes off! These knives are from makers that do not forge their own damascus and are from fairly reputable makers. The one knife was returned for a new blade already, since the first one had a similar problem, but also had to tiny holes in it (about 1 mm each). The replacement blade is from another source (I'm pretty sure I recognize the pattern). What's wrong with the steel? I'm really embarassed to return the one for a SECOND new blade, and haven't done so yet. I really like the one knife as a user.

It could be the source of the damascus, (poor combination of steels, bad welds in the steel, etc). Also excessive time in the etching medium (Acid or Chloride??) could be your problem.
Without a look at the blade, it's hard to tell

PLEASE do not post a picture of it on the forum. Bad blood and all that stuff you know!!

The Problem it sound's like is that the steel is not heattreated properly which is why you get a "Crumbly edge " the pit's are common in many maker's steel they are flaw's in the welding process which if i made the steel i would definately want returned ! Good Damascus will have No Flaw's in the steel but is much more expensive to buy if you don't know how to properly Make it . Try contacting the Maker of the Steel if you can , I Will not use Thunderforge brand for anything .

Thanks guys. My bet is on the heat treating since that's not the first time I've heard that explaination. I just wasn't certain that damascus WAS rountinly heat treated, since it has to be forged to begin with. I'll get in touch with both makers.
